DOG SHOW

FINE ANIMALS BENCHED CANTERBURY KENNEL CLUB’S EXHIBITION i Cocker Spaniels, Irish Setters, Smooth Fox Terriers, and Springer Spaniels comprised the largest entries at the thirty-first annual show of the ' Canterbury Kennel Club, opened at the Show Grounds yesterday in conjunction with the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Royal Show. Last year the entries totalled 850—a record for the club—and this year 700 dogs were benched. Toy dogs were also well represented, more than 40 appearing in the ring. The judges were —Sporting dogs, Dr. A. C. McKillop; toy dogs, Mrs F. E. Biltcliff; terriers and non-sportmg dogs. Mr George Biltcliff. The judge of the non-sporting dogs, Mr G. Biltcliff, expressed the opinion that Wire and Smooth Terriers were on the up-grade. Airedales and Irish Terriers, on the other hand, were going down in quality, the reason being, apparenlly, that no fresh- blood was being imported. The best of the Airedales of 1936 could not have taken a ticket 20 years ago, he said. Codies and Alsatians were two other breeds that were not improving, the I'aubs in the Collies being bad mouths and bad ear carriage. Their coats were good but not up to standard by a long way. “As for Bulldogs, I am glad to say that they register some improvement.” said Mr Biltcliff. are certainly on the up-grade but. at the same time, breeders should pay more attention to soundness.” “I was very pleased to see such good entries in both the Pomeranian and Pekingese sections,” said the judge. Mrs F. E. Biltcliff. “Undoubtedly the best dog in the show, as far as my sections were concerned, was Mrs A. Palmer’s Ohariu Fancy Sunray, a Pomeranian bitch. The best Pekingese was Miss A. Hanson-Bud-den’s Dah Ling, of Windermere.” Mrs Biltcliff added that the work of judging had been a pleasure to her. and that she had been particularly pleased to note two very good Pugs benched —the best seen in Canterbury for a long time. Spaniels were strong and made up the best benching he had seen for several years, said Dr. A. C. McKillop, judge of the sporting dogs. The Irish Setter section was excellent, but there was one English Setter which was undoubtedly outstanding. “There is no doubt that the club is able to produce many very fine animals,” added Dr. McKillop. SHORTHORN SOCIETY OFFICERS ELECTED AT ANNUAL MEETING The introduction of special classes at Metropolitan and Royal Shows for Polled Shorthorns was advocated by a resolution carried by the annual meeting of the Shorthorn Society yesterday. It was decided to send a recommendation to this effect to the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand and to the Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The annual report discussed the importance of accepting for registration only those animals whose ancestry could be traced for the requisite number of generations, the publication of volume 28 of the herd book, for which entries of calvings up to June 30, 1936, would be received to the end of this year, and the chilled beef trade.

The statement of accounts showed a surplus of £lO 3s on the year’s working, after reserving £3O towards the cost of volume 28 of the herd book. Officers were elected as follows: — President, Professor R. E. Alexander; vice-president, Mr A. Hunter; council, Messrs D. J. Holden (North Island), and D. G. Wright (South Island). i
