MR SAVAGE ON SAVING
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS, Sir, —I find myself agreeing with K. A. Lovoll-Smith this morning, as I have with other letters of his that have appeared on this page. It may not be possible to give a perfect start to all the horses that the socialist-cum-com-munist stable has in training, nor would it be wise to try to start them all together or even in the same race. In my 70 years I have seen two or three phases of thought as to property—its sacredness, etc. —passed through. At this show time retrospect may be pleasantly indulged in by us old ’uns, though some of us may be stiff-necked, or Peter Pans, and refuse to agree to encomiums about the “good old days.” More than a few of us have seen “unearned increment,” “equity.” and such like things vanish like morning mist—values that- were built up by such things as freezing chambers, which had the opposite effect of freezing the flow of money towards the pastoral industry. We are told that “2dwt in the dust is now a payable proposition in South Africa, and it may mean that the whole countryside may be rooted over with gyrotillers and washed for gold, leaving the boulders on top as is being done on the West Coast, leaving a heritage that will cause our -descendants to curse ns for a money-grubbing lot. Our beautiful- east coast road will be bound to be scarred by the railway cuttings, but. they will heal over. But scars such as are being made in Spain, spiritual scars, as are being caused by the clash of opinions as to conduct, these will take longer to heal. If these opinions were probed to the roots it would be found that the roots were perverted ideas about property. Wemust teach our children saner ideas about pi'operty than those we were brought up in, and inspiritual things, too. —Yours, etc., PETER TROLOVE. November 11. 1036.
