ARMISTICE DAY OBSERVANCE
The anniversary of Armistice Day was observed in Lyttelton by the stoppage of traffic in the streets and the cessation of work on the waterfront for two minutes from 11 a.m. At the council chambers, the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) and council officers stood outside the chambers while the New Zealand ensign was lowered to halfmast for two minutes. On board H.M.S. Wellington, which is in port at Lyttelton, the crew paraded on the quar-ter-deck while Last Post was sounded. A short service was conducted by the Rev. E. E. Malden, vicar of St. Saviour’s Church, West Lyttelton, concluding with the sounding of Reveille.
Magistrate’s Court
Mr F. F. Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. For being on licensed premises after hours. Michael McGuirk and James Lee were each convicted and fined 10s and ordered to pay 10s costs. The following traffic cases were dealt with as the result of informations laid by the inspector for the Lyttelton Borough Council (Mr G. M. Daniel): — Arthur Leslie Pethybridge, for failing to give way to traffic on the right, fined 20s and ordered to pay costs, 10s: Thomas H. Scarlett, for driving a truck with inadequate brakes, fined 20s and ordered to pay costs, 10s; Patrick Owen, for driving a motor-cycle at more than 30 miles an hour (voluntary appearance), fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, ss; Thomas Arthur Alexander, for driving a motor-cycle at more than 30 miles an hour, fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, 10s. and for driving without a license, ordered to pay costs 10s.
