CHARGE AGAINST PARENT DISMISSED MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS AT WESTPORT A charge brought by the Education Department against Samuel Hogarth because of the non-attendance of three of his children at the Westport State School was dismissed by Mf H. Morgan S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Westport, after Hogarth had produced medical certificates showing that one of the children concerned had been prevented from attending for four months because of an operation, and that the other children had suffered from whooping cough. At the same time the magistrate warned Hogarth that in the circumstances it was his duty to have obtained written exemption from the headmaster. Truant Inspector T. Cole, of Nelson, said that the defendant had been twice warned. . ... , On a charge of riding a cycle at night without a light, T. A. McDonald, who was recently convicted on a similar charge, was fined 12s 6d and ordered to pay costs. j. T. Erskine, a judgment debtor, was ordered to pay J. W. Stowell and Sons, £ls 8s 9d, forthwith, in default 16 days in Greymouth prison, the warrant to be suspended as long as the defendant pays 10s fortnightly, the first payment to be made on November 25. _______ TIMBER WORKERS’ UNION PROTEST AGAINST LOW BASIC WAGE BATE An emphatic protest at the low basic wage rate struck by the Arbitration Court was passed by the executive of the Westland Timber Workers Union at a recent meeting of the .executive. Mr J. Doyle presided. It wag decided to ask the Government to alter the rate by Act of Parliament, as it was said the court was apparently handing out the same old treatment to the workers. The president and the secretary, Mr F Turley, were appointed to attend the conference of all timber workers to be held in Wellington on NovemA vote of £5 was passed to the Spanish Government. It was decided to vote 10s to the Wellington Trades and Labour Council for the costs incurred in the presentation of the basic wage case to the Arbitration Court. PERSONS FOUND ON LICENSED PREMISES AFTER HOURS A warning to persons fr®quenting licensed premises after hours and to hotel licensees was issued by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, at Westport, yesterday. “I have just dealt with about 40 cases of persons found on licensed premises after hours, and the licensees have also been charged with selling after hours,” said Mr Morgan. This unusually large list of such offences shows that the position about licensed houses in Westport is pretty bad. I issue this warning to persons found on licensed premises after hours, and to licensees generally, that unless there is a considerable reduction in the number of cases appearing before me, the fines will be increased, and licensees will be lucky if they get off without having their licenses endorsed. KARORO SPORTS CLUB REVISION OF PROGRAMME SUGGESTED The necessity lor something new in the way of sporting events was stressed by the president of the Karoro Sports Club, in his annual report, which was presented to the annual meeting of the club recently. Mr J. McDiarmid was m the chair. .... The chairman said that there was a need for something new because the entries in the foot race events bad been very poor, during the last few years. He asked that when framing the programme for the next meeting to be held in February members should give this matter further consideration, with the object of providing something that would attract the public and also be suitable to the club. The chopping and other events had always drawn large entries. , He referred to the loss the district had suffered in the death of Mr H. Weenink, who had been a keen supporter of the club recently. The president said that a small loss had been made during the year. The entries at the annual sports had been a slight decrease in comparison with the previous year, while the gate receipts had also showij a small decrease. Mr A. H. Leaper, the Nelson Education Board's architect, and Mr T. Cole, truant officer, are visiting Westport. Mr W. Atkinson, of Hamilton, who has been visiting bis mother, Mrs S. J. Atkinson, of Westport, left for the north again on Tuesday. Mr L. J. Bayfield, manager of the Chateau Tongariro, National Park, is visiting relatives in Westport. A presentation of an electric water jug was made by members of the Westport Fire Brigade on Tuesday evening to Fireman G. Maxwell, whose marriage took place recently. The presentation was made by Superintendent J. Daily, and other speakers were Deputy Superintendent W. Phibbs, Messrs McDonagh (secretary), and O. L. Nahr (member of the Fire Board). Fireman Maxwell suitably returned thanks.

It was decided to write to the Runanga Club asking for an explanation of its failure to play its last two senior matches. , . AERODROME EXTENSION AT GREYMOUTH SURVEY OF CROSS RUNWAY BEING MADE Consideration to the extension of the cross runway of the- Greymouth aerodrome is being given by the Public Works Department* and a survey is now being made of tbu land which would, be used for the extension. file extension is made it will make erodrome capable of dealing with amclasses of aeroplanes. Before the extension can be made the Greymouth Harbour Board will have to be consulted, as it is possible that it would interfere with the tidal area. COBDEN SWIMMING CLUB

BETTER SEASON ANTICIPATED

Because of the adverse weather the club had not had as successful a season last year as it might have, but taking everything into consideration he thought that the club this year would have a better season, said the chairman, Mr F. W. Baillie, at the annual meeting of the Cobden Amateur Swimming Club, on Tuesday night. The balance-sheet, which showed a good credit balance, was adopted.
