OAKS DAY AT RICCARTON

Top Notch Beats Ceme Abbas TRENCH FIGHT WINS HANDICAP WUd Chase Again Successful The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting was continued at Riccarton yesterday under very favourable conditions, compared with those of the two previous days of the programme. The track and grounds had dried up considerably, and the going was much improved, some fast tunes being recorded. There was a large attendance, though hardly up to that on Cup day, and speculation was very brisk. The sum of £3B,ZSb (win £18,227, place £20,029) was handled, against £22,670 (win £11,802, place £10,868) on the corresponding day at last year s meeting. The total for the three completed days is £118,496 10s, as against £92,918 10s last year, an increase of £25,578. A comparative list of the investments on the three days of the meeting over the last eight years is as follows: Cup Day. Derby Day. Oaks Day.

The Jockey Club Handicap was won by the three-year-old Trench Fight, who, in spite of beings headed by Plato nearing the post, finished too solidly for the Okawa representative. Dungarvan, conceding a good deal of weight to both, finished a good third. Wild Chase added to his excellent record by placing the Canterbury Cup to the credit of Sir Charles Clifford, who got his name on the winning list for the weight-for-age event for the first time. Sir Charles Clifford also won the New Zealand Oaks for the first time, his Day Comet filly Top Notch scoring a meritorious win from Cerne Abbas and Laughing Lass. A feature of the programme was again the remarkable success of the Chokebore stable, which supplied three winners, all in succession, and two third place-getters, making eight wins for the meeting to date and five minor placmgs.

Details of the racing are as winners of the race are:

NOTES ON THE RACING

Spearmarch Opens Account Investors commenced the day well by making Spearmarch favourite for the Port Cooper Brush Hurdles, as he won after an interesting tussle with Redolent, Acena and Look Smart disputed the lead until the former retired three furlongs from home, and Look Smart and Spearmarch turned for home almost abreast, clear of Redolent and Santoft. Redolent jumped to the front at the last fence, and 100 yards from the post appeared to be a comfortable winner, but Spearmarch worried him out of his position a few strides from the line and gained a head verdict. Look Smart weakened into a moderate third place, three lengths in front of Santoft, who gave one of his poor displays. Acena and Lady Kate were beaten off. Spearmarch owed his victory to better staying ability than Redolent, and gave indications of going on to become a high-class hurdler. Redolent showed a big improvement on his first day’s effort, but the journey found him out. Look Smart also fared better, but was done with at the last fence. Santoft was never going so well as on the first day, a failing he has previously displayed at a meeting. Acena went to the front at the second fence, and was mainly responsible for the good time recorded, but he could not carry on. Lady Kate was the leader for about a furlong, but soon went back to last place and stayed there. Toreador did not improve. Brunhilde Again Royal Chief and Brunhilde had most support in the Spring Nursery Handicap, and they fought out the finish, with Brunhilde again triumphant. Brunhilde, from wide put. began smartly, and working her way towards the rails was in front on to the course proper from Royal Chief, Bellerive. Merry March, Airam, and Royal Order. Brunhilde and Royal Chief drew away from the field inside the distance, and although the former always held control, Royal Chief was only half a length away at the post. Lazybones did not become prominent until a furlong away, and he finished fast into third place, two lengths in front of his stable mate Mulatto. Royal Order. Airam, Accomplice, Bellerive, and Solpit followed. The winner again showed marked speed, and in this case combined it with stamina, as she ran out the five furlongs very solidly. Royal Chief showed another encouraging effort, and will probably do better later over more ground than the winner. Lazybones came from well back, and Mulatto, who was making his first appearance, also did some good work over the last furlong. Royal Order was slower than many of the others to get into his stride, but ran a useful race nevertheless. Merry March, by Nightmarch from Kilmiss, showed prominence for , half a mile, as did Bellerive and Airam. The Fillies’ Classic Laughing Lass was a surprise favourite for the New Zealand Oaks, but after being in a good position entering the straight she failed to see the jouri ney out. Dawning Light and La France acted as pacemakers for three parts of 1 the journey, with Laughing Lass and Double Gift next in front of Top Notch and Cerne Abbas. The last-named i made a fast forward move rounding the home turn, where the two leaders 1 dropped out, and Double Gift led into ( the straight from Laughing Lass, Cerne Abbas, and Top Notch. Cerne Abbas i soon had Double Gift’s measure, but inside the distance Top Notch had taken 1 charge, and, without being seriously f threatened, won decisively from Cerne Abbas, who beat Laughing Lass by half • a length. There was then a gap of 10 lengths to Double Gift, with Dawning Light and La France well in the rear. Tpp Notch outclassed the others once ! the serious stages were reached. Cerne : Abbas had every chance, but never gave indications of beating the winner I in the straight Dawning Light and , La Prance gave poor displays as stayers.

Favourite’s Meritorious Win

Trench Fight, favourite for the Jockey Club Handicap, showed another sterling performance in winning in fast time, after a stubborn battle with Plato. He was first out, and held command throughout from Plato, untij the latter drew up to him inside the distance and headed him momentarily, but the favourite came again, and won by a neck. Dungarvan, who was third into the straight, was in difficulty under his big weight after the distance was passed, and was two lengths away, m third place, more than a length in front of Boomerang. Concertpitch was next with Pakanui, Southdown and Carfex following at intervals. Trench Fight was responsible for the fast run mile, the first half being run in 46 3-ssec, with a strong following wind. He is undoubtedly one of the best of the season’s three-year-olds, in spite of his defeat by Wild Chase in the Derby. Plato improved on his previous display, but just failed to go on with the advantage he gained a furlong from home. Dungarvan had a big task, especially in such a fast run race, and there was every excuse for his defeat. Boomerang was never really dangerous, but Concertpitch failed to show any of his previous dash, and is evidently not himself. Pakanui was done with as soon as the run home was commenced. The Canterbury Cup

Wild Chase completed the hat-trick for Sir Charles Clifford and the stable horseman, G. Humphries, by winning the weight-for-age event, the Canterbury Cup, in a convincing manner. Gustos was the first to act as pacemaker, but was joined by Cuddle at the mile, and the pair carried on in front until Cuddle took sole charge rounding the top turn. Wild Chase, who was six lengths back at the mile, made a forward move passing the five furlong post, and soon passed Gustos, and set off after Cuddle, who was about three lengths in front entering the straight, but Wild Chase had her measure before the distance post was passed, and gradually drew away to win by nearly two lengths. Master Brierly, who tailed the field from the early stages, but was never far away, put in a telling finishing effort to get within half a length of Cuddle. Argentic was five lengths away, a similar distance in front of Gustos, who faded right out three furlongs from home. Gold Boa Repeats

The favourite for the Ashley Handicap, Black Thread, failed to make good, but the second choice, Gold Boa, justified her position by a decisive win. She drew a position wide out, but beginning smartly, soon rushed to the front, and when the course proper was reached she held an inside berth from Joyous, with Gold Label, Thermidor. Cyrillian, Black Thread, and Wine Card the most prominent of the others. The two leaders had the finish to themselves. Gold Boa easily accounting for Joyous. In a close tussle for third money. Wine Card just beat Thermidor. Roaming, Autumn Wind, and Cyrillian were next. Gold Boa reeled off another creditable performance, and seems to be at hcmejn all kinds of going. Joyous did better on the improved surface. Wine Card was nearer the leaders at the post than at any previous stage, and just got up to head off Thermidor, who ran another sound race. Mandamus Stays On Willie Win, favourite for the Otaio Plate, was badly favoured at the start, and he was in last place for about two furlongs. Pink Del soon opened up a gap from Mandamus and Jack Ahoy,

and carried on to the home turn, where Mandamus wore her down. Mandamus was first to enter the straight from Jack Ahoy, Convivial. Geitel, and Willie Win. Geitel did not last long, and Willie Win joined Jack Ahoy and Convivial in challenging Mandamus, but none could not make much impression, and Mandamus had a comfortable victory from Willie Win, who got up in the last few strides to beat Jack Ahoy, with Convivial a neck away. Heloise was next, in front of Geitel, High Glee, Rebel Lad, and Chidden, in that order.

SEYMOUR HANDICAP, of 250 sovs. Seven furlongs.

This was the winner’s first success since he won on the second day of the Wanganui meeting in September. Willie Win was undoubtedly unlucky, as he lost some valuable ground early, and had to go round several horses to get into the finish. Jack Ahoy ran a sound race, and Convivial, having her first outing at the meeting, again indicated her ability over a middle distance. Chidden was never dangerous, and Rebel Lad, after a slow beginning, was never within reach of the leaders. Pink Del showed a lot of pace, and N at one stage was four lengths out in' front. Studley Royal was slow away, and failed to improve his position to any extent. Triune Wins Paper Slipper was confidently supported to win the concluding event, but did not get away as smartly as usual, and when he tried to make a forward move up to the leaders turning for home,- there was no opening for him, and he did not get through until nearing the post. He then put in some solid work, but was beaten into third place. Triune, on the rails, was one of the first to show out, with Arrowrose, Bon Tray, Knockfin, Capital, and Invoice also prominent. There was not much between Triune, Bon Tray, and Arrowrose on to the course proper, with Capital and Knockfin in close attendance, and Paper Slipper and Greek Gold following. Triune had charge passing the distance, and carried on for a fairly comfortable win from Greek Gold, who beat Paper Slipper by a neck, with Capital a head away. Guarantee, Bon Tray, and Manetho followed. Triune benefited by his two previous races, and had this event won a good distance from home. Greek Gold finished from well back on this occasion. Paper Slipper finished solidly after an unfavourable passage. Capital was always prominent, without being dangerous. An improved performance came from Guarantee, who will soon return to the winning list. HANDICAPS FOR FOURTH DAY Mr J. E.
