The July gold production of the Transvaal has reached the highest level since May, 1933, 949,6£0 ounces, worth £6,576,603. having been produced by the 38 large gold mines of the prov'ince. The July figures show an increase of 22,828 ounces, worth £165,008. over the June returns, the average daily output of the Witwatersrand mines being 35,173.7 ounces. This new record is the more remarkable as it has not been achieved by increasing the average grade of ore mined, but by increasing the crushing capacity of the mines. Whereas a comparatively high grade of ore was being milled iir 1933, just after South Africa abandoned the gold standard, the present taxation system favours low grade mining. The mines, by utilising otherwise uneconomical low grade ore bodies and by sending more ore through the mills, are making steady progress and are increasing their contributions towards the wealth of South Africa.
