MINISTER PRAISES DR. LOVELOCK

“PLACE MAY BE FOUND FOR HIM-HERE”

RHODES SCHOLARS WHO -DO NOT RETURN (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.S WELLINGTON, November 11. “Whatever foreboding there might be that the Government was going to try to go faster than Dr. Lovelock, there is unanimity that it had done the right thing in inviting him to revisit his native land,” said the Minister for Health (the Hon. P. Fraser), at a dinner tendered to the athlete by tho New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games’ Association. Mr Fraser added that it had been indicated to Dr. Lovelock that if he thinks his life work lies here a place might be found for him, and his name exploited in the interests of the young people of New Zealand. The Minister complimented the secretary of the association for having suggested in the newspapers that Dr. Lovelock might be offered the position of director of physical culture for the Dominion. The Minister said he was quite satisfied that Dr. Lovelock was well equipped to give advice to the youth of the country on physical education. The Chief Justice (the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers), who proposed the toast of Dr. Lovelock’s health, said that his feat in winning the mile event was made possible through the beneficence of Cecil Rhodes. “I wonder if you know that the percentage of Rhodes Scholars who return to New Zealand is by far the smallest of any country.” Sir Michael Myers said. “Why is it that they say they do not get an opportunity, and, if they do come back, they have to start at the bottom rung of the ladder?Something should be done to make a position for some of our Rhodes Scholars, and Dr. Lovelock is one of them. I suggest that he might specialise in public health in order that he may come back with the laudable ambition of &t one time being a Minter for Public Health.” DEPARTURE FOR SOUTH ISLAND (PRESS ASSOCJATIO* TBLIC»U.) WELLINGTON, November 11. Having fulfilled a strenuous round of engagements, Dr. J, E. Lovelock left for the South Island to-night in continuation of his tour of New Zealand as the guest of the Government. He was accompanied by Mr H. Ramsden, of the Department of Internal Affairs.
