JOCKEY CLUB’S BALL

A GREAT SUCCESS MANY HANDSOME GOWNS A triumphant re-entry into the social life of the province was made last night by the Canterbury Jockey Club, when, after an interval of seven years, it again held its annual ball. It was so successful that it fully maintained the high standard of brilliance for which the club was formerly famed. Members of the sub-committee who arranged the ball were Mr and Mrs Derrick Gould, Mr and Mrs Endell Wanklyn, Messrs Gilbert Grigg, H. A. Rhind, and H. G. Helmore. ... The decorations, simple and dignified, were most effective. The predominating colour was beige pinki Circular shades of this delicate colour softened the lights and the alcoves and the windows were draped with Venetian curtains to match. ■ The alcove reserved for Mr Arthur Elworthy, chairman of the club, and Mrs Elworthy, was decorated with green and gold Mr Elworthy’s racing colours. The lounges were gay with Iceland poppies and irises, the big marquee, jn which supper was served, was frescoed with emerald green and the small supper tables were brightened with low bowls of mixed flowers.
