WESTPORT WATERSIDERS* DECISION

LITTLE INCONVENIENCE TO VESSELS

It is understood that the Westport Watersiders’ Union has decided to refuse to work after midnight and that the matter was discussed at a meeting of the Westport Disputes Committee yesterday. The union has 100 members. . Continuous work, in order to give vessels as rapid dispatch as possible, has hitherto been considered essential at Westport, so that the least possible risk is run of ships being confined to the port by bad weather making the bar unworkable.

HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE

ANOTHER TEACHER WANTED NEXT YEAR

The monthly meeting of the Hokitika District High School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, with Mr A. C. Armstrong (chairman) presiding. , , , . The chairman extended a welcome to the new headmaster, Mr J. G. Johnst0 The board requested that 10 per cent, of the yearly increase in incidentals be devoted to ground improvement. An invitation was received from the All Saints’ Church committee for members to attend the unveiling of the tablet of the new church on November 1. The dental nurse reported that there had been 143 attendances at the clinic during the month of September. The headmaster reported that Miss C. Newman had replaced Miss White oh the staff. The primary roll had increased to 340 and the secondary roll was 109. The primary roll had averaged 339 for the four weeks ended October 2, and in view of the Minister’s recent announcement that schools would be graded for 1937 on 95 per cent, of this average, the school would be placed in a higher sub-grade. This would mean another permanent assistant on the staff next year. It was decided to inform the teacher at the Ruatapu school that his pupils were entitled to treatment at the Hokitika dental clinic and that the school would be levied £1 a year toward expenses.

HOKITIKA CRICKET CLUB

SUPPORT FOR SATURDAY COMPETITION

Mr F. Stapleton presided at the annual meeting of the Hokitika Cricket Club. The report said that the club had a successful season last year.

The following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr J. O’Brien, M.P.; president, Dr. T. W. Childs; vice-presidents, as for last year, with the addition of Messrs G. Schroder, F, Freitas, and C, O’Rourke: club captain, Me A. Thomas; joint secretaries and treasurers, Messrs F. Stapleton and D. J. Spence; committee, Messrs G. Stapleton, A. Adamson, and M. Morgan; delegate to sub-association, Mr D. J. Spence. Mr M. Bowden was elected an honorary life member. Nine new members were elected.. After a discussion on the possibility of a Saturday competition, it was decided to instruct the delegate to support the proposal, and in the meantime enter two teams for the Sunday competition.

HOKITIKA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Mrs S. Bassett presided at the October meeting of the Hokitika Women’s Institute, and extended a welcome to Mrs L. R. Gibb and Miss Gibb, visitors from the Waiho institute. A number of members took part in a card evening, the winner being Mrs W. F. Ashley. The competition for the best supper procurable for sixpence was won by Mrs R. Paterson, with Mrs R. Collett second. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames F. Fane, F. Gallop, J, Hutchinson, J. Kidd, and Miss E. Knight.

REEFTON TENNIS CLUB

ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS

The annual general meeting of the Reefton Tennis Club was held with Mr T. H. Lee, jun., presiding. The annual report showed that the last season had been a successful one both financially and from a playing viewpoint. The financial membership had showed a slight decrease, but to offset this 14 members had been added to the senior membership. Irrespective of Juniors, th club had 74 members.* The balance-sheet showed that receipts were £47 9s, and expenditure £2B lls Id.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Mr J. B. Auld; vice-presi-dent, Mr G. E. Hubbard; club captain, Mr T. H. Lee, jun.; treasurer, Mrs Russell: secretary, Mr Parris; auditor, Mr T. H. Lee, jun.; committee, Mesdames Eklund, Lawry, McVlcar, Miss Farrell, Messrs Blackmore, Weston, W. Pertnington and Father Heavy; caretaker, Mr Elliston. The renewal of the courts was discussed and the committee reported that a scheme for the financing had been evolved, and it was recommended that the incoming committee place this In operation. It was resolved that the president and the vice-president be sent letters of appreciation for their offers of financial assistance to carry the scheme out. • , Several new members were proposed and opening day was fixed for October 17.
