During the temporary absence of Mr F. J. T. Grigg, Mr N. P. Alcorn, of the staff of the Government Laboratory, has been appointed gas examiner in Christchurch. Mr C, J. Read, of the Audit Department, Wellington, has left on transfer to Hamilton, which for the next two years will be his headquarters as an audit inspector.

The Rev. C. S. Matthews, who has been on a visit to England, will return by the Rangitiki at the end of the month. He has accepted a temporary position at the Lyajl Bay Baptist Church.

Chief-Detective J. Carroll of Wellington, arrived frym the north yesterday.

Mr H. D. Skinner, of the University of Otago Museum, arrived from the north yesterday and left later for the south. Mr Skinner has returned from a 10 months’ trip abroad, in which he visited 100 museums in England, America, and the Continent. Mr Skinner received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation last year, which enabled him to make the trip. Messrs C. T. Haberfield (Timaru), G. G. Kelly (Wellington), and Mawson Stewart, jun. (Christchurch) were visitors at yesterday’s Rotary luncheon.

Mr Stewart Mair, of Fendalton, arrived in Christchurch yesterday after a business visit to Britain and the United States.

A framed photograph of the executive of the Suburban Cricket Association was presented to the Pioneer Amateur Sports Club last evening by Mr E. King, president of the association. The presentation was made to Mr C. Leeming, secretary of the club, in appreciation of the courtesies extended by officials of the club to the association.

Messrs R. J. G./Collins and W. Peers were elected honorary life members of the Air Mail Society of New Zealand at the sixth annual meeting last evening. Mr H. D. London was elected president.

Officers of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture met at the Lyttelton office of the department to bid farewell to Mr W. Grant, dairy produce grader in charge, and supervising grader for the South Island, who is retiring after 32 years’ service. Among those present were Mr W. M. Singleton, director of the Dairy Division, and Mr A. Ross, Mr Grant’s successor. Mr Singleton, in presenting Mr Grant with a chiming clock from his fellowofficers, spoke of his sterling qualities and the efficient and conscientious manner in which he had always performed his duties. Mrs Grant was given a crystal bowl. Other officers also spoke in eulogistic terms, and Mr Grant suitably acknowledged the gifts.
