LADIES PLAY AT HAREWOOD
NORtfM CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP
The North Canterbury ladies' championship tournament opened at the Harewood links yesterday, with players from the city .and suburban clubs, Ellesmere, Port Levy, Ashburton, Amurl, Kaltuna, Horo* rata, and Kaiapol taking part. A strong cold north-easterly wind blew across the course making play difficult, and the scoring was not good. In the first qualifying round of the championship, Mias Valmai Fleming, who won the championship of the Christchurch Ladles’ Golf Club last week, headed the list with a score of 84. 10 strokes above the scratch score, and Mrs W, Toomey was second with 86, two strokes above her handicap. In the first round of the junior championship. Miss N, Frater led with 98. Miss B. E. Coop, of Kaltuna, reduced her handicap from 31 to 28, and Miss J. Whltcombe reduced one stroke. In the bogey handicap match played in the afternoon, Mrs Toomey won in the senior division with a score of 1 up, and Mrs A. A. Mitchell In the junior division all square. FOSTER CUP
The annual handicap bogey match played by members of the Canterbury branch of the British Medical Association was held at the Shirley links yesterday and was won by Dr. H. Knight with a score of 2 up. A putting competition for women, for a prize given by Dr. and Mrs Douglas Anderson, was won by Mrs W. A. Johnston, of Lincoln. Players and their wives were entertained at tea by Dr. and JUre Anderson. The following were the best scores:—H. Knight 2 up, J. K. Davidson square. W, G. Rich 3 down. W. G, Scannelf 4 down, Edgar Reay 4 down, P. S. Foster 6 down, M. K. Gray 6 down, D. McMillan 6 down, A. C. Thomson 6 down, S. Hunter 6 down. J. D. Marks 7 down, F. W. Hehnore 7 down.
KAIAPOI CLUB
In the final of the foursome knock-out competition played at the Kaiapol Women’s Golf Club yesterday, Mrs W. paton and Mrs R. J. Smith beat Mrs G. Hirst • and Miss G; Martyn, 6 up and 4 to play. A stroke match for non-handicap players was won by Mrs W. Stevens, with lid.
AVONDALE LADIES’ CLUB
The Winners of the closing day midweek competitions held yesterday were as follows:—Senior flag match, Mrs J. Martin; junior flag match, Mrs H. R. Blair; senior foursome, Mrs J. M. Preston and Mrs F. Reynolds: junior foursome, Mrs J. W. Huggins and Mrs A. W. Spence; C grade competition, Mrs C. F. Woods; putting, Mrs J. M. Preston. The captain, Mrs W. J. Owens, presented the trophies won during the year, including the Avondale Cup, to Mrs K. B. Macßae, and Avondale Foursome cup to Mrs J. M. Preston and Mrs H. R, Blair.
