RUGBY FOOTBALL

AMALGAMATION OF OLD

BOYS’ CLUBS

CHRIST’S COLLEGE AND ST. ? ; ANDREW’S

The amalgamation of the Old Collegians’ Club and the St. Andrew’s College Old Boys’ Club was approved at a meeting last night of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union. It was stated that the new club, which will be known as the Collegians’ Football Club, would probably field three teams next season, but it was unlikely that a team would be entered in the senior competition for at least two years.

Membership of the club will be confined at least to old boys and Piasters of Christ’s College and St. Andrew’s College. It was suggested that membership should be open to old boys of all secondary schools outside Christchurch, or, alternatively, ! to old boys of Scots College, McGlashan College, King’s College, and Wanganui Collegiate School, but this suggestion was referred to the annual meeting of the union. ' Representatives of the clubs who waited as a delegation on the management committee, said that both clubs ban been struggling for existence for some years, and at present could field only one team each. The new club would probably enter a team in the junior, third,“.and fourth grade competitions. It was hoped to nave.a senior team In a year or two. It was a matter for the union to decide whether the club’s membership should be extended to old boys of secondary schools outside of Christchurch, or to old boys of King’s College, Wanganui Collegiate School, McGlashan College, and Scots College, all of which were formed on the same lines as Christ’s College and St Andrew’s College.

The proposal for amalgamation was unanimously approved, but some members opposed the admission of old boys of outside Schools to membership. A motion that membership be confined/to old boys of the two colleges was lost, and 'the question of wider membership was referred to the annual meeting of the union.
