OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, October 6. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time cf issue, is as follows: —

light to moderate northerly winds, turning temporarily to south-west, weather changeable, with scattered but mainly light showers at times to-night, but improving during Wednesday. Temperatures cool to moderate. Seas rather rou'h north of Kaikoura; elsewhere slight to moderate. The following is the Dominion forecast:— Maipiy fair in eastern, coastal areas; otherwise clondy to overcast, and with rain at times, more especially in districts with a westerly aspect. Weather improving Luring to-morrow in most parts; temperatures ccol to moderate. A depression is crossing the Dominion to-day, and it is being followed by a secondary across the Tasman Sea. An anti-cyclone is still centred north of New Zealand, and another one is now located over eastern Australia.

Winds—Northerly to westerly predominating, strong and squally in parts of the Cook Strait and Foveaux Strait areas, but otherwise mainly moderate, backing r' 1 * ; me3 to south * ~terly in many places.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

A strong easterly wind and an overcast sky made conditions very unpleasant in Christchurch yesterday. Although the temperatures kept fairly high throughout the day it seemed possible that rain would come up at any time. The wind dropped in the evening, whiph was warm. At 1 o’clock this morning, the weather was'dear and calm. The temperature was 43 degrees. The barometer, after rising, was steady at 30.05 in. Auckland—Yesterday there was a light north-west wind with overcast threatening weather, and continuous light rain after midday. After falling slightly during the afternoon, the baroxtieter remained steady at 30.20 Inches.

Wellington—The weather was dull and threatening throughout the day, with a strong gusty north-westerly wind. The minimum temperature on Monday night was 49.0 degrees; the maximum yesterday was 58.8 degrees. Dunedin —The weather was pleasant yesterday, -vith a slight breeze from the south-west. 1 There were passing clouds, and though rain threatened late in the afternoon, none fell. The maximum temperature was 60 degrees, and the barometer registered 29.80 inches last night.
