PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORRQW

The Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting will open at Wingatui to-mor-row. ‘Die fields are not as large as usual, but quality is well represented, and there should be some close racing. The win and place system will again be in operation. The following horses can be expected to race well:—

Spring Hurdles—Polydora, Santoft, and Vitaphone. Trial Handicap—Thermidor, La France, Autumn Wind. Maungatua ‘ Hack Handicap—Poniard, Jack Ahoy, Recollection. Electric Handicap—Paper Slipper, Bay Duke, Capital. Mosgiel Handicap—The Surgeon, Queen Dorothy, Golden King.

McLean Stakes—Atalanta Lass, Card Player, Lazybones. October Handicap—Queen Dorothy, Viking, Daring Deed. Taioma Hack Handicap—Epic, Silver Lark, Top Notch. The programme is as follows: —

Most of the visiting horses from the north arrived overnight, but none of them was given fast work. Juveniles Sprint The most interesting piece of work was a gallop on the course proper hy se v » voungsters, who, after some practice at toe half-mile barrier, ran the full course of the McLean Stakes. Forecast was first to jump out, but before many strides Atalanta Lass took charge Tnd at the end of a furlong and a half Lord Nuffield had run into second nlace. Atalanta Lass Led Lord Nuffield into the straight, and at the latter appeared to have Atalanta Lass doing her best, but she was fully equal to the challenge and drew away to head him by a length and a half in 53sec. Gusto finished on well and was a length away Lass is a half-sister by Iliad to Guarantee, and the satisfactory manner in which she performed will bring her into favour for Thursday’s classic. Grand Finale held Waltham at all stages in a run over six furlongs on the tan, the last five in Imln 6sec. Travenna was going much better than The Jeweller over six furlongs on the tan in Imln 21 3-ssec. Useful Tasks Bay Duke, with a big weight up. was travelling on the bit all the way over four furlongs on the grass in 52 3-ssec, Vantoon easily accounted for Toreador over six furlongs on the tan, the last five in Imin Bsec. . Viking had Paladlno for a mate in a run over six furlongs on the grass, but beat him at the jump off and had him scrambling all toe way. The last four furlongs by Viking were done in 50 4-ssec. Silver Jest beat Lumlere over six furlongs on the tan, toe last half-mile in 54gec, but Lumlere gave toe impression that she could have done better. Polydora, looking well after her race at Kurow, was ridden by R. Beale over two schooling hurdles, and afterwards completed a round on toe tan. The Surgeon, looking better than when he finished third in toe Geraldine Cup, was let off with three-quarter pace work. Autumn Wind, apparently, suffering no ill-effects from his break-away along the road yesterday morning, was sprinted (two furlongs in 26 2-ssec. Chrysology (W. Cooper) jumped two schooling hurdles attractively. Daring Deed finished a neck in front of Golden King over a mile on the tan. From toe seven furlong post they took 40sec for the next three furlongs, and took 52 3-ssec for the last four. Golden King was conceding weight to Daring Deed, and finished as if he could have done better.
