MINISTER’S VISIT TO ENGLAND

MR G, A. DUNCAN NOT TO ACCOMPANY MR NASH

PRESSURE OF DEPARTMENTAL ORGANISATION v

[From Our Parliamentary Reporter]

WELLINGTON, October 5.

A decision not to include the ActingDirector of Marketing (Mr G. A, Duncan) in his staff for his visit to England, has been reached by the Minister for Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash). In making this announcement to-day, Mr Nash said the pressure of departmental organisation, and the negotiations for the zoning of dairy supplies, would prevent Mr Duncan from accompanying him. However, arrangements would be made for Mr Duncan to investigate marketing conditions in England at a later date. “There are matters of importance and urgency before the Marketing Department at present,” said Mr Nash, “and more are likely to arise within the next few months. Consideration of these would be to some extent prejudiced if the director of the department and myself were both absent from the Dominion at the same time. One of the problems is the supply of butter boxes and cheese crates. In addition, important work which faces the Executive Commission of Agriculture within the next few months, in the rationalisation of cream cartage and the zoning of dairy factory supplies, would definitely be facilitated if Mr Duncan were able to assist the other two members of the commission. “To a large extent, the overseas marketing policy for this season has been settled and the selling agents have been appointed. I feel, therefore, that Mr Duncan can be more useful in New Zealand. However, it is probable that when the marketing arrangements for next season have to be reviewed in the ' light of the results and experiences of this season’s operations, and of the future policy determined by the Government after my visit to Great Britain, it will be desirable for Mr Duncan to visit England and study in detail the work of the sales division of the Marketing Department.”
