The Minister in charge of the celebrations (Mr J. M. Dunrunghami said that he had written to Sir Apirana Ngata suggesting that a war canoe, or canoes, manned.by Maoris in fighting dress, should be sent to Sydney. It was thought that the appearance of these picturesque craft and their crews, in races on the harbour during the aquatic carnival, as well as on shore, would greatly enhance the spefctacular effect which was aimed at in the organisation. The Minister said that as New Zealand will celebrate its centennial in 1940, the proposed gesture by the Dominion for 1938 might be Reciprocated.
