CYCLING

authority of N.Z. federation

AMATEUR SECRETARY’S attitude

Complaints that the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association, Mr A. C. Massingham, was doing his best to undermine the authority of the New Zealand Cycling Federation werd made at a meeting of the federation last evening. A sheaf of letters from Mr Massingham, criticising the federation and its activities, was before the meeting, and it Was alleged that much of tins was not authorised by his association. It Was decided to take ho action until after the October meeting of the amateur association, which Was to have been held last night in Wellington. ' When Mr Massingham’s letters had been read, the acting-chairman, Mr J. M Coffey, said he was satisfied the federation had come to stay, it seemed that Mr Massingham wantea to control cycling affairs in New Zealand. He admitted that he had had litue. experience, and it was apparent that he had not. Since he haa been secretary of the amateur association, everything Mr Massingham had done had been destructive. He had gone about trying to turn the various associations against the federation, When Mr A. R. Thomas and Mr J. Fitzsimmons, president, came tb Christchurch some time ago, they came with a Wrong impression given them by Mr Massingham, and they went away satisfied that the federation had Come to stay. It Was the determined policy of the federation to carry out to the letter the mandate it had from the Union Cydiste Internationale, the

international governing body. It appeared likely that Mr Massingham s activity would dissuade the Northern Athletic Union from affiliating with the federation. He was out to damage the federation, and it should be firm with him. M ~ ~ A letter sent by Mr Coffey to Mr Thomas was read, and it was reported that Mr Thomas would refer this to the October meeting of the amateur association. After some discussion, it was decided to take no action until after the next meeting of the amateur body. The federation decided not to permit Australian cash riders to compete in the North Island during the Christmas holidays, unless the clubs With which they competed Were affiliated With the federation.

It was decided to congratulate G. R. Giles, of Canterbury, on his success in finishing eighth at the Olympic Games. The secretary was instructed to make arrangements for a Welcome home to him.

It was decided to congratulate H. G. Watson on his performances in Australia, and W. J, Lamberton on his success in the New Zealand 50 miles championship at Dunedin.
