RIVER PROTECTION FOR TEMUKA BOROUGH
SUBSIDY AVAILABLE FROM DEPARTMENT
A subsidy of £39y for river protection works, for the Temuka borougn, estimated to Cost £936, will be provided by the Public Works Def»artment tl required, according to a etteT received by the Geraldine County River Board at its' meeting yesterday. As the Temuka Borough Council has decided to remain outside the river board area, it was decided to refer the letter to the council for its consideration.
The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) advised that he had giveh cor sideration to a report preSared by his department after inspecon had been made of the localities concerned, in company with the engineer to the Geraldine River Board. Although the board woiMd understand that it was not possible to formulate any comprehensive scheme of river control Until the proposed river survey had been completed, he was informed that protection work should begin ‘mmediately at the points mentioned. - The work required at Qodley street was estimated to cost £426, and at Maude street £5lO, ana as the erosion at Godley street did not directly affect CtoWn property, but did at Maude street, ne had agreed to provide a subsidy of £1 for £2 in the first case, and £1 tor £1 in the case of the Maude street work. ■ ' . ■ He was of opinion that. the work should be Under the control of the Geraldine River Bpard, but before any work was undertaken, proposals should be approved by his department and application made lor the required monetary authority.
