TWO GIRLS HAVE NARROW ESCAPE HOTEL TOTALLY DESTROYED (THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, October 4. ■ Two youug girls narrowly escaped serious injury when the Kamo Hotel, about three miles from Whangarei, was totally destroyed by fixe last evening. Practically’ all . the. contents of the building were lost, The two girls were Jean Brydon, aged 12. and Valma Brydon. aged 8, daughters of the owner and licensee, Mr W. J. Brydon. The children were ,in their room on the second storey shortly after 8 o’clock, .preparing for bed, when the elder said she could smell. smoke. * They saw whispS of smoke coming through the floor, and, becoming alarmed, began ,to scream. 3£cs Brydon, who came in response to their >. cries, could see no sign of fire, but the ehijdrpn, who were bare-footed, complained that the floor was becoming hot. . Mr Brydon made an investigation and found that a large hot water cupboard ih the kitchen below the bedroom had burst into flames. The bedroom above was soon blazing. The children escaped in their night attire. As there is no water supply ,or fire brigade at Kamo the Whangarei brigade had to be summoned. Though it was soon on the scene, the flames had gained a strong hold and the hotel was destroyed. A shop about 25 yards away was scorched along the side and 13 main telephone linns between Auckland.
