TUAHIWI DRAINAGE SCHEME WORK TO BEGIN 'THIS WEEK A Start with the drainage scheme at Tuahiwi will probably be made this week the cusintsT m charge of the Skyriv«|protective scheme (Mr B. Mclntyre) having been advised that it will be undertaken. About four miles of’drains will be laid to take water into the Cam river, and. up to 30 men under No. 5 scheme will be employed. These will be drawn from Tuahiwi, ‘‘Stagnant water has been lying at Tuahiwi ever since the floods last February,’’ Mr Mclntyre said on Saturday. “This has affected the water supply of the settlement, and there is also the danger of an epidemic breaking out. The scheme will be of great benefit not only to the Maoris but also to the general community.” . _ The scheme was drawn up following a conference among Judge Harvey, Of the Native Land Court. Mr McIntyre, and leading Tuahiwi residents. It dll be controlled by Mr Mclntyre. Outbreak of Fire Fire broke out in a store-room above the -cake and confectionery shop in Victoria street, occupied by. Mr, Frederick W. Wilson, about 1 o’clock yesterday morning, and practically gutted the upper part of the wooden building. The contents of the shop and of. a store behind used by John Jphnston. Ltd., were damaged by smoke and wa ter. When the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade was called, the fire had a strong hold, but it was soon under control and the flames were prevented from spreading to adjoining wooden buildings. Owned by Mr William B. Johnston, the building was insured with the New Zealand Insurance Company but the amount of the cover was not ascertainable yesterday. A defective electric light fitting in the store is thought to have been the cause of the fire, ■ United Sports Club’s Opening There was a very large attendance of members, friends, and visitors at the opening of the United Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club, Rangiora, on Saturday afternoon. Bowlers; and croquet players from Christchurch and North Canterbury districts spent an enjoyable afternoon playing friendly games, and exhibition tennis matches were played hy C. Angas and R. Browning and H. A. Barnett and G. Ollivier, each pair winning a set, 6-5. The president of the club (Mr P. T. Ager) welcomed the visitors and declared the season open, wishing members every success. Miss Mary Ager rolled up kitty and Mrs Ager played the first bowl. Mr Browning (vicepresident of the Canterbury % Lawn Tennis Association) also extended best wishes for an enjoyable season. Church Services Youth day in Presbyterian churches throughout the Dominion was observed with special services at the John Knox Church, Rangiora, yesterday. The Rev. J. A. F. Watson was the preacher, an-’ his subjects were “The Joy of Worship” and “The Reality of Worship.” The morning service was a Sunday school- one, and items were given by the junior choir. Miss M. Yates sang “There is a Green Hill.” Miss J. Keir and Mr V. J. Corbett read the lessons at the Bible class service in the evening. Gifts of flowers were made by children at the morning service at the Rangiora Methodist Church, and these were later distributed at the hospitals. Miss D. Ayers sang a solo, and the Rev. T, Coatswc. An Inter-denominational youth rally under the auspices of the Rangiora Ministers’ Association was held in the Salvation Army Hall yesterday afternoon, when the speaker was Adjutant E, Chandler. Educational institute Support for the Rangiora High School was sought from primary school teachers in th district by a deputation which waited on a meeting of the Ashley branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute in Rangiora on Friday evening.. The deputation consisted of Messrs C. I. Jennings (chairman o* the uoard of Governors of the school), W. A. Banks. N. Goldsbury (members of the board), and J. E. Strachan (principal). Mr Strachan invited members Of the institute to insp :ct the Carnegie Corporation’s gift of art teaching .material to the high school, and the invitation was accepted for October 13. _ ' A deputation consisting of Messrs H. A. Bennett and G. M. Unemployment Allocation A decrease of two in the number of relief workers in the Rangiora district who will receive sustenance payments Is shown in the 'unemployment allocation for this week, compared with that for last week. It was decided to suggest to the committee set up by the recent local body conference called by the Canterbury Progress League that central authorities . such as afforestation boards covering large areas should control all plans in the province. Mr ,P. R. Climie (organiser of the Progress League) attended the meeting of the committee. Personal Mr and Mrs J. Boyd, who left Rangiora recently to reside in Christchurch, were entertained by parishioners of the Rangiora Catholic Church at a Social evening on Saturday. Father J. A. McKay presented Mrs Boyd with a handbag and Mr Boyd with a pipe. Methodist Tenni; Club The Rangiora ; Methodist Tennis Clul opened its season on Saturday afternoon." KAIAPOI WORKING MEN’S CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING FOR SEASON , The official opening erf the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club Bowling Club took place on Saturday afternoon. The president (Mr H. Tavendale), in the presence of a large gathering of members and Visitors, in a. brief opening address welcomed the visiting bowlers and ladies and expressed the wish that under the pleasant weather conditions prevailing all would have an enjoyable afternoon. . , Mr W. Healy, president of the centre, extended congratulations to the club on the excellent condition of the Seen and its appointments and wished i members success. The Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. McClintock was appointed a member of the association. The Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association advised that it had accepted the gift of a trophy from Mr G. O, Rutherford for annual competition in a class for the North Canterbury champion hunter. The first competition for the trophy would be held at the Amuri annual show in March in 1937, and is to be followed alternatively at Cheviot-and Ha warden shows, the order to be arranged at a later date. The season was marred by unsatisfactory weather conditions, and no children’s competitions could be carried out.
