BLANK FINISHES WELL CHRISTCHURCH CLUB TITLE P. R. GODBY BEATEN IN FINE MATCH In a very fine match, in which the winner did not once lead' until the thirtysixth hole, A. R. Blank defeated P. R. Godby, 1 up, for the championship of the Christchurch Golf Club on Saturday afternoon. Blank, who is one of the most experienced golfers in the province, was given a great fight by his young opponent, who, one up after the morning round, held a lead of two holes from the twentythird to the thirtieth. Godby still had a lead at the thirty-fifth, but dropped a stroke on each of the last two holes. Neither player was right on his game In the morning, both missing some short putts, but in the afternoon both players played really fine golf. Their driving'" throughout was a feature of the game. Blank having only three poor drives and Godby playing without an error until the last hole, when he hooked under the trees. Both players had trouble in stopping the ball on the greens, the ground being very hard in spite of its green appearance. The weather was perfect for the game, and there was only a light wind. ’ Close Scoring

The players matched each other stroke for stroke through the greater part of the game, and only one hole in the first half of the morning round and one again in the first half of the afternoon round were not halved.

Godby lost his chance at the thirtieth, when Blank hooked his second into a bunker and his opponent failed to stop his ball on the green after an approach over the guarding bunker. Blank won that hole and squared the match with a great two at the short thirty-first. At the next Godby narrowly missed a j?utt for an eagle three, and the hole was halved in birdie fours. Godby took the lead again at the short thirty-third, and Blank had to sink a tricky six-footer on the next green for a half. At the thirty-fifth Godby failed to find the green with his second and missed a five-foot putt lor the half. His hooked drive at the last hole left him an awkward approach from under the trees, and Blank, playing safe, won the hole and the championship with a par four. The cards were as follows: MORNING Out: Par .. 44355444 3—36 Blank ..15 5 3 6 5 44 5 4—41 . ANOTHER. WIN FOR A. R. BLANK THE NORTH CANTERBURY ' CHAMPIONSHIPS A. R. Blank won his second championship in two days when he returned cards of 79 in each round of the North Canterbury amateur golf championship at Harewood yesterday. Conditions were very bad, as a high wind syrept across the course practically all day, and little shelter was to be had at any of the holes. The wind made distances very hard to judge, and while holes of 500 yards could be reached in two, a powerful iron was needed to get the green at the fourth, about 140 yards away. The standard among the seniors was not good, and Blank’s two rounds were the only gross scores returned in the seventies. The juniors were in better form, and both morning and afternoon medal rounds were won with net scores of 69. C. J. Ward and J. L. Blair were runners-up to Blank in the senior championship, and Blair’s rooming round won him the senior medal. In the afternoon this medal was won by C. S. Peate with a card of 81, 6— 75. The junior' medals were won by I*. J. Moorhouse "in the morning and by R. C. Saunders in the afternoon, each with cards of 69, the former playing from the 15 mark and the latter from the 18 mark. The gross score teams’ match resulted in a tie between the Shirley and Avondale teams, and the handicap teams’ match was won by a Harewood team, with two other Harewood teams in second and third place. A putting competition was won by E. A. Etheridge with a card of 15 for nine holes. Bogey handicaps were played on Saturday, when the bogey of the course was badly beaten by several players. S. Morris won the event with a card of 6 up and A. B. Edwardes was second with a score of 5 up. The following were the results:— SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
