APPOINTMENT OF MR T. HYDE

MANUFACTURERS’ NEW SCHEME

FULL TIME ORGANISING SECRETARY

Mr T. Hyde, who has Been assistantsecretary of the Canterbury Employers’ Association for the last six years, has been appointed full time organising secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, and with his appointment is planned a comprehensive reorganisation and widening of the association’s activities. The announcement of Mr Hyde’s appointment, which was confirmed by the council of the Manufacturers’ Association at its last meeting, was authorised last evening by the president, Mr C. H. Burson, who said that Mr Hyde would commence his new duties on ! November l. ' , A scheme of reorganisation which would cover the activities of aU the manufacturers’ associations throughout the Dominion was beirig -planned, he said, and the Canterbury association would announce the details of its new polity at the annual meeting on November 5. Closer union between the associations in the various centres was being aimed at, as it was realised that all manufacturers should be able to speak with one voice. Under the new schema it was hoped that every manufacturer would belong to the association. One aspect of the new scheme would be the. organisation of manufacturing trade groups, ; Full time secretaries had been appointed by the Auckland and Wellington associations, and Dunedin hoped to do the same. ' - When asked about the formations# individual trade groups within the association, Mr Hyde said that the object was to further the special interests of the various trades. . There was a movement towards co-ordination of activity with this end in view, and it was" aimed nationally to concentrate oh problems confronting manufacturers as a whole as well as individual industries. Wide Experience of Industry Mr Hyde was educated privately and at Canterbury University College, where he has taken a Bachelor of Commerce and accountancy course, specialising in Industrial subjects. His first position was in an accountants office, after which he was accountant with a city firm. He joined the staff of the Canterbury Employers’ Association as assistant .secretary in 1830, During the time he has held this office he has acted as employers’ advocate in the .conciliation council and Arbitration Court on many occasions ahd has had wide experience of trade oiganisation. ’ He has also represented trade groups before parliamentary commissions. During the last six months, which have been particularly busy ones for the association, Mr Hyde has had _to take charge of the office during the absence of the secretary, Mr D._' 1. Macdonald, who has been attending

sittings of conciliation councils and the* Arbitration Court, and has nan to spend much of his time away fro™ Christchurch. During this time the task of giving employers information and advice on the new industrial legislation has fallen on, Mr Hyde when Mr Macdohald was away. • ■ . Mr Hyde has been a member of the executive of the Canterbury College Students' Association, secretary of the college football club’s jubilee committee and for two years business manager of the Canterbury College revue.
