Sir; —Throughout the world to-mor-row, October 4, will be observed as a day oh which an especial appeal will be made on behalf of the animals., The day. itself is dedicated to that unique lover of animals, St. Francis of Assisi. ,v It is related of St. Francis that he not only spoke Of his “little brothers and sisters, the birds” and of his “brothers the wolves,” but that he in practice used to remove into safety even the worms that lay in his path. Nay more, it is said that he forbade his followers to uproot or destroy even a tree. 7 Such a kindly attitude of mind towards other forms of. life Would surely make one feel that one was of some use in the world. Now it is further related of the saint that not only did the larks sing joyously round his cell when he breached his last, but he himself in his life was always singing.
