FLEMING WINS CHAMPIONSHIP Miss Valmai Fleming, a member of the Tasman Cup team which recently visited Australia, won the championship of the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club yesterday for the third time. In the final over 36 holes she beat Miss Maberley Beadel, 4 and 3. The junior challenge cup was won by Mrs L. B. Scott, who beat Miss Nancy. Frater in the final, 3 and 2. The tournament began on Tuesday, was continued on Wednesday, and concluded yesterday. The links were In splendid order and the weather was perfect until yesterday afternoon, when a keen easterly wind blew, but was not strong enough to affect the standard of play. The surprise of the tournament was the defeat, in the first round, of Miss Betty Rutherford, the holder of the title for the last two years. She was beaten by Mrs lan - Buchanan, who played well throughout the tournament, and who was beaten in' a later round by Mrs Ahster McKlUop. Miss Beadel, who put " p th ® gallant fight against Miss Fleming in the final, first won the championship in >92 and again in 1925. She was beaten in 1926, but won again in 1927 and m the two succeeding years. Miss Rutoerfor beat her in 1930, winning the title tor the first time, but Miss Beadel won for the sixth time in 1931. . _ nlf She and, Miss Fleming played good golf in the first round of the final yesterday morning, and- the match wa ®„f9H ar ® the eighteenth green. Miss went round in 78—41 out and 37 in—' one stroke better than Miss Fleming, who went out in 43 arid heme in 36. Both were driving well, Miss Fleming having occasionally a slight advantage in length, while the outstanding feature of Miss Beadel s P la Y^ a ® the accuracy of her chip shots. Miss Fleming started badly. She lost the first hole, drove out of bounds at the long fourth and lost that hole, and then lost “Nor’-west”—Miss Beadel 3 up after seven holes. Miss Fleming won the next two holes, and Miss Beadel turned 1 up. Miss Fleming squared the match at the twelfth, “The Pines,” with a birdie 3, after a brilliant mashie second. Miss Beadel missed an easy chance at “Old Nick, but she won applause later by holing a chip shot from the edge of the green at the short fifteenth. Miss Fleming retaliated with a brilliant three at “Te Oranga,” and the last hole being halved, the players went in to lunch all square. In the afternoon Miss Beadel was a little less steady, and Miss Fleming made few mistakes. At the first hole Miss Fleming ran into the lead for the first time. The match wAs squared at the next hole, however, but Miss Beadel was bunkered and conceded the hole at “Muggerlde’s.” Miss Fleming never lost the lead again, although Miss Beadel won a hole occasionally and fought always. Miss Fleming made her position very safe by winning the twelfth and thirteenth, the thirtieth and thirty-first of the match, making her 4 up with five to go. The best Miss Beadel could do was to halve the next two holes, and the match ended at the thirty-third. Miss Fleming 4 up and 3 to play. * Junior ' Challenge Cup

The four semi-finalists in the junior challenge cup were Mesdames J. S. Middleton, the holder, and L. B. Scott, Misses Nancy Frater and Kathleen Rutherford. each of whom has a handicap of 19. In the morning Miss Frater, a young player who Is improving steadily, beat Mrs Middleton, 4 and 3, and Mrs Scott beat Miss Rutherford by the same margin. Miss Rutherford, who is only 17 years of age, Is a very promising golfer. She has great length from the tees, seldom strays from the fairways, and Is at home with her Iron clubs. With practice and experience in match play, she should do very well in the future. In the final, Mrs Scott and Miss Frater both played steadily, with one or two lapses, and Mrs Scott owed her win to greater accuracy on the greens. Mrs M. H. Godby, captain of the club, umpired for the championship match, and Miss D. Anderson for the final of the junior match. . The medal foursome was won by Miss R. Wynn-Williams and Miss Joan Hargreaves. The best scores were as follows: —Miss R. Wynn-Williams and Miss J. Hargreaves, 101, 29—72; Mrs I. Buchanan and Miss P. Norton, 86, 13—73; Lady Ward and Miss M. Newton, 106, 27—79; Mrs A. McKlUop and Miss R. Cracroft Wilson, 91, 10—81; Mrs P. H. N. Freeth and Miss' B. Webb, 105, 23—82.

HAGLEY LADIES* CLUB

The closing day four-ball bogey match for prizes given by the president, Mr M. Foley, resulted in a tie between Mrs J. C. Cullman and Miss M. E. Holmes and Mrs W. J. Cartwright and Mrs C. W. Price. In a recount over the last nine holes, Mrs Cartwright and Mrs l Price won the first prize, the second prize going to Mrs Cullman and Miss Holmes. In the putting competition Mrs C. G. Wilkin won the A grade and Miss E. Hill the B grade. The final of the knock-out bogey foursome for prizes given by Mrs A. C. Bretherton, was won by Miss E. Stewart ancjL Miss G. Denshire.

HAGLEY LADIES BEAT ASHBURTON LADIES

A friendly match played on the Hagley links between teams from Ashburton' and Hagley, ended in a win for the Hagley team by 6J games to SJ. Results (Ashburton names first): — ' ■ Singles—Miss J. A successful open tournament was held by the Rakaia Golf Club, there being 54 competitors. The senior championship, over 36 holes, was Won by E. H.
