RACING AND TROTTING

LATEST NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR

RACING. FIXTURES

'the name of which has for the third time been placed on the schooling list, shall, notwithstanding anything contained in the next succeeding ruH be permanently ineligible to be entered for or to start in any flat racy, and if started: ;in any such race shall be disqualified for the race.” The reading of this rule specifies a flat race, so that the conference, under the rules, could not bar any horse from starling in hurdles. However, the difficulty has been overcome by the secretary of that body circularising all clubs that entries of the horse Hunting Jay shall not be accepted.

Jones, in a letter received in Christchurch this week, said that al-’ though he had made tentative arrangements to leave Sydney for New Zealand at the conclusion of the Randwick meeting, there was a possibility of his taking Gustos to Melbourne should he race well in to-day's Derby, or in his later engagements on the programme. No .doubt if the trip is decided upon, the other members of Jones’s team will be returned home. AJ.C. Derby Favourite Gold Rod, bought in New Zealand for 350 guineas, was the bargain of horses that raced as two-year-olds in Australia last season. - He wound up with £5665, of which £3OO went to the nominator of his. sire for the V.R.C. and AJT.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes. His two wins for a similar number of starts this season have returned £1250. A Rider’s Appeal Although no news has been cabled, the-announcement that M. McCarten will now ride The Marne in the Epsom Handicap makes it appear certain that the appeal of D. Munro was unsuccessful. The Marne, already a solid favourite for the big mile, will lose nothing by the change, of horsemen. McCarten has won the Epsom previously on Autopay in 1931. On that occasion also he was a replacement in the saddle owing to A. E. Ellis being unable to make the trip. History may repeat itself. At Flemlngton To-day Although the limelight in Australia to-day will be focused mainly »n Randwick, there is an important meeting at Flemington, where the V.R.C. will stage its October meeting. Principal events are the Edward Manifold Stakes, of 1000 sovs, for three-y Harold fillies, one mile, the Melbourne Stakes, of 750 sovs, w.f.a., with penalties and allowances, one mile, and the Marffcymohg Trial Stakes, for fillies and tor colts and geldings (two year-olds), both of 500 sovs, about inur furlongs and a half. Oratory is engaged in the Melbourne Stakes, vhich has a strong field, including Young Idea, Valiant Chief, Golden Promise, Regular Bachelor, Prince Quex, Bimilla and Cpnandale. Chief Ranger is engaged in the Stand Handicap, of 500 sovs, one mile and a quarter. Mr Kemball’s two-year-olds Lady Quex and Sunnymom are in their respective divisions of the Maribyrnong Trial. An Early Success . Wananga, winner of the Trial Stakes at Napier Park last week, is one of the first of the progeny of the Aus-tralian-bred horse Ofation, by Ciceroi from Elsie Hart, who scored a surprise win in the Avondale All-Aged Stakes in 1925. Bred by Dr. C. Blundell, of Te Awamutu, Wananga is raced by Mr W. Horgan, and is a tour-year-old gelding from Flower Gold, by Si Amans from Shower Gold, by Marble Arch ’ from the imported mare Merry Njf, by Merry Hampton. Merry Nif was the dam of General Latour and Shower Gold produced King Lu, So that there have been some good gallopers in the family. Wananga was having his first race, and is evidently speedy, which is not surprising In view of his breeding. Investors’ Association In a letter to the "Dominion,” a correspondent wrote the following:—“I have much pleasure in suggesting to those of your readers who are Investors on horse racing that the time is long overdue for organising a na-. tional association to represent them, and lend impetus to the much-needed reforms which we all nope to obtain In the rear future, viz.: (1) Reduced taxation; (2) licensing of bookmakers, both on courses and away from them; (3) publication of dividends by press and radio; (4) doubles totalisator on all leading courses; (5) telegraphing and posting of money to the totalisatcr, or (alternatively) the establishment of agencies by the Government for receiving mohey for the totalizator in all towns. This could be made a special new branch of the Post and Telegraph Department, and would,be very popular. I believe that the greatest care is needed at the present juncture to ensure that the. interests of the punters are placed first, where they rightly belong, not subordinated to those of the wealthy owners, and exorbitant taxes.” An Epsom Favourite . The-Mame has now won at his last two starts, the Warwick Farm Campbell town Handicap, six furlongs, and the ThttersalTs Tramway / Handicap, seven furlongs. Last season his limit appeared to be about six furlongs, out from his latest effort it would seem possible the, Epsom Handicap distance may not be beyond him. His breeding is not against this Idea. He is by Heroic from Kalyanni, by Treclare from Lystrim, by Cooltrlm from Lyssa, by Ayr Laddie tracing to Britannia (12) by Cathedral. An Hansnal Case Word has now been received that Hunting Jay has been barred from racing. It is believed that this Is the 'first Case of its kind in New Zealand. Rule 116 reads: “Every horse

Hew Zealand' Cup Meeting The first acceptance for the New Zealand Cup, received last night, ‘has reduced the number nominated from 52 to 36, the majority of the withdrawals being in the lower-weighted division. Notable defections are Silver Ring, Greek Shepherd, Royal Appellant, and Silver Streak, but these were not unexpected. Vintage, as was the case last year, will now be No. 1 on the card, but his weight, 8-13, is 61b below what he carried on that occasion, when he finished out of a place. Queen of Song-remains in, so it is evident she will return to New Zealand if she fails to make good at the Randwick meeting. The North Island is strongly represented by Master Briefly, Velocipede, King Rey, Person, Lowenberg (last.year’s Derby winner), Prostration, Hazoor, Hunting Gat, Dungarvan, Korero, Werohia. Aussie Ra, Might, Shy, Entheos, Gay Boy, Dark Shadow, and Otaki. The nominations for the remaining principal events on next month s programme show a very slight- decrease in numbers as compared with last year’s figures, but the list is a very attractive one, and includes some of the best horses in commission from all parts of New Zealand. The response for these events promises well for the fields for* the minor events, nominations for which will close on October 23, when an acceptance for the Stewards’ Handicap, a further payment for the New Zealand Cup, and first forfeits for the classic events will also be due. Handicaps for the Stewards’ Handicap will be available on October 20. TROTTING NOTES South Canterbury J.C. Nominations for trotting events at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Monday. Events requiring attention by owners are the Washdyke Handicap, of £lls 3min 43sec class, one mile and a half, and the Hadlow Handicap, of £lls, 3min Ssec class, one mile and a quarter. Both races cater for maiden pacers and with many of these available entries should be numerous. Reminders

Nominations for the New Zealand Champion Stakes, to bfe decided at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting in 1937, will close on Monday next at 5 p.m. _ . , , Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s spring meeting will close on Tuesday. _ . , Nominations for the New Zealand Cup will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Nominations for trotting events at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting will close on Monday. Nominations tor the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ charity meeting will close on Monday. Nominations for the Manawatu Trotting Club’s annual meeting will close on October 12.

Encouraging Young Drivers For the Charity meeting to be held at Addington on October 15, there is a suggestion that in one race on the programme horses should be driven by men bolding B grade drivers’ licenses or even by stable attendants. The suggestion is an excellent one, for the younger drivers nowadays receive very few chances ih public to show their ability, although their services are in demand for training work. A race for young drivers would be of distinct value to the sport and especially to owners and trainers on the look-out for good free-lance horsemen. Bracketed Horses

Bracketed horses at the Methven meeting to-day are:— . Westward Ho Handicap—Billy Grattan ahd FloodUght,.Heather Queen and Labourman, Jane Worthy and Mauri McKinney. . ' „ , _ Visitors’ Handicap—Morello and Encounter. . . _ . . Mount Hutt Handicap—Ace Pot and Aircraft. Chance for Improvers The Ballins Breweries Handicap, to be decided at the Charity meeting on October 15. will be run over a mile and a half and horses will be handicapped on a 3min 39sec limit. This race will afford a fine opportunity for horses that have won a race and whose trainers wish to give them an outing without having to concede big starts. Decoy Bird ' Our Southland correspondent writes as follows: A Gore sportsman is negotiating lor the purchase of the Wrack —Lone Bird gelding, Decoy Bird, raced by the Westport owner-trainer, Mr F. G. Lynch. Although he secured two wins, two seconds, and two thirds in 21 starts last season. Decoy Bird did a considerable amount of travelling to fulfil engagements; a win and three placings were secured in successive outings. He won over a mile and a half at Greymouth off 12yds in 3min 25 4-ssec, and at the Nelson meeting he won a mile harness race in 2min 13sec off 24yds. He recorded 4min 37sec off 12 yards in the Nelson Trotting Cup (two miles), finishing third to Ideal (scr), ahd Grand Author (24yds),
