YOUNG WRITERS

Yours and Mine. A selection from the work of thirteen young New Zealand authors. Compiled by Warwick Lawrence. Thomas Avery and Sons. 132 pp. (4/6.)

Anthologies are hard to make, and easy to criticise. Mr Lawrence has made his selection carefully, although within’ somewhat narrow limits. The South Island—from which much good work has come in the last few years—appears to have been unduly neglected, and he does not seem to be aware Tiat there has been a definite breakaway from the story of wistful theme and faery atmosphere towards something a little more robust and realistic. This does not mean that fantasy must he condemned. “Yours and Mine” includes two or three tales in this genre which have been poetical!v and delicately contrived. But juvenile fiction at its best is not merely a preparation for adult nenormance and it is to be honed that the compiler of this present antnoloey will be encouraged to carry nis researches a little further. ,Some of the stories in “Yours and Mine” are of high quality, and nearly all of them were worthy of republication in book rorm. * '
