TAR SEALING OF ESPLANADE

BOADING IMPROVEMENTS AT , NEW BRIGHTON Advice was received by the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E- L. Smith) yesterday that the tar-sealing - of ■ the Esplanade between Bowhill road and Berry street had been' transferred from the second to the first year programme of the Main Highwajjs Board, and the work would be. proceeded with on a three-to-pne subsidy. Mr Smith said last evening that the work would involve an expenditure of between £ 800 and £IOOO, and would be begun as soon as the works department of the Borough Council was ready. '

For many years, the dust nuisance along the Esplanade has been the subject of constant complaints from residents living nearby. As the road had not been declared a main highway, the council could hot undertake the work, because of the expense. However, successful negotiations by the council with the Main Highways Board resulted in the, revocation of River road as a highway, and the substituting of Rookwood avenue and Bowhill road, along the Esplanade. In the Canterbury Progress League’s liveyeas plan, the tar-sealing was placed on the second year’s estimates, but through representations made by the Mayor of New' Brighton, and Mr P. R. Clirnie, of the. Canterbury Progress League, the work was transferred to the 1936-37 estimates.
