Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting and forfeit for the Wellesley Stakes will close at 5 p.m. to-day. At Riccarton Yesterday A large number of horses were galloped at Riccarton yesterday, but'work generally was of the useful order only, with an occasional fast sprint along the back of the inSide of the trial grass/ which prodded excellent going. The plough has oeen again thrown open, ’and some trainers made .use of it, but it will be in more demand when the grass tracks are dry. Early Workers Half of the Chokebore team was out before breakfast. Top Notch and Thermidor covered a mile together in Imin4ssec. Recollection and Dropped Catch ran half a mile along the back in Slsec, and lazybones and Day Dress followed In SOsec. ' Paper" Slipper galloped six furlongs on the plough in Imin 19sec. This was the only serious work on that track. : . ■ Matoru went - over; seven, furlongs at three-quarter pace, and Grieek Gold did similar work over five furlongs, while Dollar Bill and Atalanta Lass ran halfa mile’ along the back in 49sec. • , - After the Interval' Rebel Chief was restricted to strong work over seven furlongs. He thrived on His recent two races, and should soon return .to the winning list Not' For Kurow Southdown reeled off half a mile in Slsec. and Brevity recorded 50 2-5 sec. ; Southdown has been suffering from , slight lameness since racing at Ashburton, and will not go to Kurow. Polygraph, assisted by Speannarcb over the last half-mile, covered seven furlongs in Imin' 34sec. La France and Rodeur were together over half a mile in 50 3-ssec. Pblydora, with Swordstick over the last half, rgn a mile in Imin 43sec, taking SOsec for the first half. Rousseau,- Chidden, and Sovereign Lady were companions over half a mile in 51sec, finishing in a bunch. J Pelmet beat Sir Hugh by half a length at the end of seven furlongs - in linin' 30' 3-ssec, the-last half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Madge’s- Coin and Night Loo ran half a mile along the back in 50 3-5 sec. , f • Stays on Well L. J. Ellis, who was engaged to ride Southdown in the Kurow Cup, will now have the, mount on Queen Dorothy, who, on Geraldine form, is likely to be in keen demand. The Latest Restriction The trainers taking horses to the Kurow meeting to-morrow intended making use of horse floats as it was considered the journey by this means would be more expeditiously covered than by rail to Oamaru. Under new ‘ regulations, however, ai float is not available. It has been laid down that when tw3 meetings - are held on the same day, such as . at Methven and Kurow to-morrow, only one permit for the- use of floats wilfe be granted, and that for the nearer meeting, which in this case is Methven. The Riccarton horses will now go fb Oamaru by this' afternoon's train (at express rates), and stay at Oamaru to-mgnr. They will -travel by a special race train from Oamaru to Kurow to-mor-row, and return there after the races. At Eandwick To-morrow The Australian Jockey Club's spring ~ meting -will open at Randwick tomorrow, when six events as follows will be decided, thestarting times being New Zealand summertime: —3 p.m., First Hurdles, of - 200 sovs, about two miles; 4 p.m.. Last year’s New Zealand Cup was won by Cuddle (7-13), with Vanestep (7-3) second. Neither of these is engaged in this year’s cup, but Argentic, who finished/third with 7-8, has 7-9 in this year’s race, and Fersen, who was fourth under, v-7, has 7-9. Only two others in. last year’s race, Sunee, Who. was tenths and Tout le Monde, whq was pulled up at the end of a mile and a quarter, are engaged again this year, and, if started, will again carry 7-0. Phar Lap’s Sister Among the mares at Mr H. E. Morriss’s Banstead Manor Stud, England, is Phar Lap’s sister, Te Uira, who was specially purchased for the stud last year. Te Uira is said to be in foal to Colorado Kid, who is by Colorado from Spearmint’s daughter, Baby Polly, ana was a very successful racehorse a few years ago. As Mr, Morriss owns .the stallions Manna and Tai-Yang, Te Uira should not lack for opportunities as a brood mare.

Another Speedster America’s fastest mare is Myrtlewood. At Washington Park, Chicago, last month, she carried 8-6 in the Lakeside Handicap, and, m recording a very easy victory, did the mile in -linin' 35 3-ssec; She ran the first six furlongs in Imin 9 4-ssec, and was then eased right up. Her time equalled the previous best for a mare in, America, and, in the opinion of ihany of the experts, she could have done Imin 35sec. Myrtlewood has run in 17 races for 10 wins; four seconds, and two thirds, only once missing a-place. Her earnings total £5962.

Costly to Followers , Because of .their riders’ reputations, the mounts of prominent horsemen in England are seldom at liberal odds and often the most’fashionable jockeys have been the most expensive to follow. This truth has been borne out ibis year in a very convincing way. showing that for the flat racing season to August 10, followers of G. Richards by a uniform investment of £1 at starting price would have lost £llß. To that date Richards had ridden 118 winning and 464 losing mounts, with a percentage of 20.27. The next most successful rider was W. Nevett, who had ridden 62 winners and 246 losers, a winning percentage of 20.12, but his followers would have incurred a loss pf £l4 on a flat wager. Indited, of the 15 leading jockeys, only two, R. A. Jones and W. Christie, who were respectively ninth and eleventh on the list, were-shoeing a small profit, the Others showing losses ranging from £139 to £l4. Amswer to Correspondent Wager, Ashburton; —In 1930, 1932, 1933, 1934, and 1935 Auditress had foals by Jack Potts. In 1931 the progeny was a ■ bay colt by Silk Thread. Australian Visitors ‘ The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has received advice that 1.. J. King, of Melbourne, will bring New Derby and another horse to New Zealand to compete at Addington in November. The Tasmanian trainer, H. F. Rudd, will bring a team of four, comprising Evicus, Icevus, Sevicue, and Emilius Way. Evicus and Sevicue are by Globe Derby, and the other pair by Emilius, all being from the one mare, Milky Way. A Useful Trotter

Amonos, under the care of W. Barron, is getting through his tasks in approved style, and yesterday he was given strong work-on the course proper at New Brighton. Amonos. has made a good deql, of improvement since being taken over by Barron, and is now a good solid- trotter with both speed and stamina. At New Brighton The track at New Brighton was in splendid order yesterday, and a fair amount of useful work was accomplished. Red Flyer, Recess, Eastern Prince, and Golden Cross were given a solid work-out over a mile and a half in 3min 36sec. All these horses paced well, and although Recess has off the, scene for some time, she is rapidly getting into form. On Parade, in L. Davidson’s stable, looks particularly well, and he worked nicely yesterday. Ginger Jack was given barrier practice, and later did a mile at a fast clip. ' This gelding disappointed his backers at the last Wellington meeting by making a bad mistake at the barrier, but yesterday he showed himself a well mannered racehorse, and a quick beginner. He is a pacer above the average. .. Aristotle and Sandy N. covered, two in 4min 54sec, and Symmetry gave a pleasing display in saddle when she covered a mile in 2min 22sec. Engaged at Methven Aide de Camp and Coral Prince, who are engaged at Methven, to-morrow, were associated .in a good work-out at Addington yesterday, when the latter, giving away two seconds, registered 2min 49 l-ssec. Aide de Gamp is an improving geiding, and will be well fancied in immediate engagements. Southland Joltings

Walsh. In 12 starts last season the Rey de Oro mare secured two minor placings. and may be ejected to do Better this season. She finished third to Worthy Claire and Guywin at the Gore Racing Club’s summer meeting, and at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting she was third to Ma Waro and - Huia Chimes. She has displayed speed'above, the. average in . dll, her outings, but isiaclined to be a nervous

performer. Her dam. Seaward Spot, was a Winton Cup winner. Vologda, a brilliant paeer but unreliable at the barrier, has been placed in work by N. S. Lawlor, who holds the Waver ley pacer on lease. Vologda appeared to race more soberly towards the end of last season, when he beat all but Southern Smile at the Forbury Park winter meeting, after conceding the smart Canterbury pacer 24 yards over a mile .and a half. At the same meeting he finished third to Stirling Lady and Embark. His performance under saddle at the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting in recording 3min 20sec off 72 yards to finish third to Belle Grattan (36 yards) and McGlusky (scr) was full Demerit The Gore. sportsman, Mr F. Wallis, jun in whose colours Chechahco won at the New Brighton meeting last month, has purchased an Americanbred two-year-old trotter in Leitrim.
