, 4 MR JAMES CRAWFORD Mr James Crawford, who died at his residence, “Brockenhurst,” Woodend, recently, was a native of County Donegal. Ireland. He came to New Zealand in 1878. in the ship Napier, landing at Port Chalmers and settled at Moa Flat In Southland. Later ha went to Clarkville, where he worsted for Mr Hay Smith. The first land ha took up was at Church Bush, Kaiapoi. Seventeen years later he purchased the homestead block of the Crossley estate, where he remained until his death. Mr Crawford married Miss Fanny Moore, of County Tyrone, Ireland, who, with her two daughters and one son, survives him. • The funeral, which was held at the Kaiapoi cemetery, was attended by friends and relatives from Taihape and Kelso, Southland, A short service was held at “Brockenhurst,” by'the Rev. G. W. Hercus, of the Kaiapoi Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. W. S. Neal, of the Woodend Methodist circuit, both of whom' also officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs Wallace Crawford'.(Kelso). Clifford Crawford (Ashburton), N» Crawford, P. Crawford. W, Turner (Christchurch), and Hi, McLean. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. ■ MR ANDREW FRASER [THE PRESS Special Service.] OAMARU, October. 1, ; Through the death, ; of Mr Andrew Fraser, of Oamaru, at the age of 80 years, Oamaru has lost a prominent personality, and one who had given the district many years of public service in hospital and charitable aid work. Mr Fraser was born at Helmsdale, Suther]andshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the early seventies by the ship Wild Deer. He settled in Dunedin, taking up a positijn with Wilkie and Company, but after about 10 years he came to Oamaru in 1883, when he took over a booksellers' and stationers’ business, owned by Mr Rename. Mr Fraser conducted Ws business successfully for nearly half a century until failing health caused his retirement a few years ago. when Ihe business was taken over by Messrs Jeffery and Smith. Mr Fraser was a prominent member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, occupying the position of Sessions Cleik from 1913 to 1931. On his resignation from the position the congregation of the church presented him with an illuminated address in appreciation of his long services. Before the constitution of the Waitaki Hospital Boat*], Mr Fraset was connected with the North Otago Benevolent Society,-which built the Victoria Home for Old People, and on the formation of the Hospital Board in 1908, he was appointed chairman, a position he held continuously until 1929, Fraser ward at the Oamaru Public Hospital, opered in 1930, was named after him. He was also chairman of the Oamaru Cemetery Trustees for a number of years, and was a member of the Oamaru, Fire Board until 1929. For many years he was a member of the Oamaru Athenaeum Committee of which he was treasurer, and also served on the Oamaru Borough council for several terms.
