Dr. T. Gilray, who has resigned from his position as honorary surgeon to the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board after serving in this capacity for 25 years, has been appointed consulting surgeon.
Mr C. de R. Andrews, who has been in charge of the Dunedin branch of the Valuation Department for the last nine years, was tendered a farewell by the staff upon his retirement on the completion of. 45 years in the public service. The Hon. Sir James Allen, M.L.C., the Hon. W. Hayward, M.L.C., and the Hon. L. M. Isitt, M.L.C., were passengers from the north by yesterday’s steamer express.
Messrs W. E. Simes and N. H. Skinner returned from the north yesterday.
Mr D. Rutherford was a passenger from Wellington by yesterday’s steamer express. Mr C. H. Clibborn, secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and Mr J. Roy Smith, secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, who have been attending the Petitions Committee cf the House of Representatives in connexion with the petition from the Port Christchurch League, returned to Christchurch yesterday morning.
Mr R. McGillivray, fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture in‘Christchurch, is at present visiting Palmerston North. He will return to Christchurch next \.Wednesday. Mr R. H. Nesbitt, Trade Commissioner for Australia in New Zealand, who has spent a few days in Christchurch, will leave on his return to Wellington by to-night’s steamer express.
Mr W. G. K. Wright, managing editor of the “Dairyman,” who has been on a business visit to Christchurch, returned to Wellington by last night’s steamer express.
Mr D. E. S. Mason, engineer to the Bluff Harbour Board, who holds the rank of lieutenant in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, has been promoted to the rank of engineer-lieutenant-commander. This is the first engineer appointment in the New Zealand Division of the Reserve. Cr. T. Milliken (chairman of the City Council’s traffic committee) and Mr H. Macintosh (Chief Traffic Inspector) left last night for Wellington to attend the conference of local bodies and motoring organisations, to discuss traffic control in the Dominion. The conference was called by the Minister for Transport, the Hon. R. Semple
A motion congratulating Dr. T. Fletcher Telford on his satisfactory recovery from a recent illness was passed at last evening’s meeting of the Canterbury centre of the Sanitary Institute, and the hope was expressed that he would soon be able to attend the meetings again.
