Purvis (Oamaru) and G, Bishop (.Ashburton) have been appointed refereer. The visiting players will be entertained at a dance in the Radiant Hall in the evening. Opportunity will also be taken to bid farewell to the Ashburton representatives, who will take part in the Dominion tournament at Blenheim. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) will be present. The team will leave the Dorothy tea rooms at 7 ?.m. next Thursday by jus. The match pencilled in for the Malvern Associati''-' on August 29 has been postponed until later, the date not being convenient for Malvern. A match will probably be played against Canterbury’s second , team on September 5. .
WAKANUI RIFLE CLUB PRESENTATION OF PRIZES The Wakanui Defence Rifle Club held a concert and dance in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening, when the prizes won during the 1934-35 and 1935-36 seasons were pre-
sented. The concert was given by Mrs Chapman's party. Songs were given by Misses H. Drummond and P. O’Grady, Messrs J. d’Auvergne and F. Porter, violin solos by Mr G. Spicer, banjo solos by Mr C. Osborne, and conjuring by Mr C. Parsons. The accompanists were Mesdames Chapman and Mitchell. , , Mr F. Frampton (patron) presented the trophies as follows: —

ANNUAL MEETING HELD
The annual meeting of the Rakaia Tennis Club was held, with Mr T. S. Shannon presiding:
The secretary’s report showed that the club had enjoyed a successful season. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £6 7s, was considered satisfactory. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr C. Garrigan; president, the flev. D. B. Ashford; vicepresidents, the Rev. H. J. W. Knights, Dr. Brass, Messrs Wright, W. J. Lee, J. P. A meeting of the arts and crafts circle of the Rakaia Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Coatsworth. Demonstrations were given by Mrs Bell (knitted soles), and Miss H. Shannon (crotchet tea cosy). A't competition, the best owl, made out of a fur cone, resulted as follows: Mrs T. Gardiner 1, Mrs Donaldson 2.
The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs C. H. Nelson and Miss R. Pluck.
Mr H. E. Herring, jM-P., and Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., have accepted office as patrons of the Ashburton Labour Day Gala.
