SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD OPENED
NEW ZEALANDER SECOND IN MEZZO SOPRANO SOLO
SYDNEY, August 20. With a programme embracing musical talent from the five states of the Commonwealth and from New Zealand, the fourth annual City of Sydney Eisteddfod was officially opened by Sir Samuel Walder.
In the mezzo soprano section Miss Eileen Courtenay, of Wellington, was placed equal second with Miss Peggy Ryan, of Svdney, each scoring 82 points. The winner, Miss Mary Winterbottom, of Sydney, was awarded 84 points. ,
COMMUNITY SINGING
Community singing in Christchurch this winter has brought £409 0s 7d to the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. At the community singing held in the Civic Theatre yesterday £37 13s 9d wgs collected. The conductor was Mr W. McNair and the pianist Mr F. L. Squire. A photograph of the 1935 All Blacks, given by their Mr J. E. Manchester, was sold for 14s 6d. Mr Manchester was presented with two kewpies, one for Canterbury and one for Otago, as mascots in the coming match for the Ranfurly Shield.
