AIR SERVICES IN NEW ZEALAND
- STATE OWNERSHIP ADVOCATED GOVERNMENT BUYS PLANT FROM UNION AIRWAYS [From Our Parliamentary Reporter! WELLINGTON, August 19. The belief that there should be no privately owned air services in New Zealand was expressed by the Minister for Defends (the Hon. F. Jones), during his speech in the defence debate in the House of Representatives to-night. “I do not think that any more privately owned services should be established in New Zealand, Mr Jones said. “I believe that it would be better for the Government to take over the services On the proposed route—in fact to take oyer all services-(-rather than to have to buy them out at some future date. In the event of war, all aeroplanes wonld be needed, and I have already referred to the prospects of buying dual purpose machines.” Mr Jones mentioned that Union Airways, Ltd., had recently imported a quantity of plant for use as ground equipment, including radio apparatus for direction finding purposes. The Government had already purchased that plant from Union Airways, and would operate it for the benefit of all commercial aircraft. It might have to make a slight charge, but it, was thought that it would be preferable to have Government control of such equipment. _____________
