THE CHURCH’S ATTITUDE TO WAR'

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TRESS. Sir,—l am not so daring as M. G. Davies is in forming conclusions on the above subject. In finding her’s. I see she is guided by that book of paradoxes which says in one place “Thou shalt not kill,” and in another. “A strong man armed keepeth his goods in peace”—till a stronger comes along? In the “Rhodes of Africa” picture we are shown two strong men arguing with the Bible at their elbow, and each going their own opposite ways. I may be wrong in differing from this—‘We can afford to stand still in the perfect faith,” etc. The crux of this situation is perhaps the “perfect faith,” so hard to attain—like that of the old lady who tried to remove her back-door clay bank by prayer. On looking out next morning she remarked, “I thought as much.” . , , , It was aeroplanes that settled Abyssinia, and it may be they will “settle” Spain. Which side is going to wangle the most aeroplanes out of onlooking Europe—watching some bull fight, indeed? London and Hull were the two towns that suffered most from air raids, . their estuaries guided the attack. The unwieldy ships of the Armada were blown and driven right round their objective, while Duke William was better advised as to how to beach his men. England’s sea power must have been at a low ebb—no Nelson to keep that Napoleon at bay. The unseen forces may have been at work in all these instances, shaping our destinies in ways not obvious at the time.—Yours, etc., PETER TROLOVE. August 18, 1936,
