HUGE SHARKS
, TO THE EDITOR Of THE PRESS. Sir,—l notice in yesterday’s paper that Mr H. W. Williams, who was associated with Mr Zane Grey on their late fishing trip to the Australian coast, questions the statement of the latter that the best fishing in the world is off the Australian coast. He considers that the belief of Mr* Grey that there are sharks from 'BO to 100 feet in the deeper waters off the Australian coast is fantastic, as he—Mr Williams—has never known one to exceed 22 feet. It may interest Mr Williams to learn that a shark was found stranded near Auckland in 1885 or 1886 and was towed to Devonport, where it was exhibited. This shark was advertised as being 40 feet long. I doubted the accuracy of these figures and went across with a tape measure and found the length to be 42 feet three inches. This shark was later towed on to a sandbank for the birds to clean up the skeleton, which was then to be removed to. the Auckland Museum. Whether it was removed or not I cannot say.—Yours, etc., T. SEARELL. August 19, 1936.
