OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE .’HESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. August 19. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and. Marlborough. issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24' hours following the time ©I issue, is as follows: — Moderate to strong northerly winds, turning later to northwest; weather fair and mild at first, but later scattered rains developing; seas moderate. The official Dominion forecast is;— Cloudy to overcast in western districts and the far north and r jnth, with rain in many places; fair for the most part east of the main ranges, bqt later some scattered light rains probable there also; temperatures still mild. While an anti-cyclone lies east of the Dominion a depression is advancing across the north Tasman Sea and an intense westerly depression extends over the south Tasman Sea. Winds—Moderate but freshening northerly later, tending to move to westerly and rising in places to gale force. Eras (New Zealand waters) —Rough on the wert coast of the South Island; moderate in coastal waters south of East Cape; elsewhere moderate to rather rough and increasing about Ccuh and Foveaux Straits. Eastern Tasman Sea— Moderate" to strong northerly to westerly wands increasing to gale force, more especially in the southern portion; seas rough. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Yesterday morning was fine and clear In Christchurch with a light wind from the north-east In the afternoon the sky clouded over and the day became colder. The evening was fine and mild though cloudy. The maximum ‘temperature during the day was 55.4 degrees. The minimum temperature during Tuesday night was 51.0 degrees, and the maximum yesterday was 55.4 degrees. Dunedin —The weather yesterday was mild, though no sunshine was recorded.
