ADDINGTON MARKET

HEAVY ENTRIES PAT STOCK CHEAPER The weekly stock market was resumed at'Addington yesterday after the holiday break. Entries were heavy In; the beef and mutton sections, due doubtless to the expectation that butchers would be actively in the market on account of the absence of a sale last week. However, the market was over-supplied, and there was a tendency for values to ease, particularly for fat cattle. These were down on an average by 15s a head on the high rates ruling at the National market. Fat Sheep were forward in excess numbers for the buying capacity, and the heavy sheep, particularly ewes, were easier by a good shilling a head. The small proportion of light-weight ewes were practically unchanged, but in a comparison of values with the last sale consideration should be given to the high rates ruling on that occasion. Store sheep sold somewhat unevenly, ewe hoggets and moderate quality ewes being scarcely so keen. The best sorts of ewes showed little change. The vealer sale was one of the best for some years, arid there was also an improved market in the pig sections, STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry comprised approximately 2500 head, compared'! with 1700 last sale. Of the number, 1730 were ewes and 680 hoggets, there being only one pen of wethers forward. The sale was a fair one. Good ewes were firm at last week's rates, whilst others, a little bad in the feet, but of good quality, were slightly weaker. Some good pens of ewe hoggets did not sell With the same freedom as a fortnight ago. There was a sprinkling to ewes and lambs. Three nice pens 61 ewe hoggets—halfbred and threequarterbred—sold at 31s Id and Sis. They would possibly .have made another Is to Is fid a few weeks ago. A good-sized line 0f'290 s. and f.m. ewes, at the point of lambing, sold at 28s fid and 29s fid, and younger ewes to 32s 3d. Ewes and lambs, all counted, sold at 13s fid to 13s 7d. The pen of adult wethers, two-tooths, made 23s fid. There were no wether hoggets penned. ... The following were the principal sales:— Ewes—49 aged halfbred at 12s. 180 f.m. halfbred at 25s fid, 88 six and eight-tooth halfbred at 32s 3d, 73 aged crossbred at 14s 7d. 57 two and four-tooth threequarterbred at 27s 9d, 164 two, four, six, and eight-tooth halfbred at 325, 120 four, six, and eight-tooth halfbred at 28fc, 290 S. and f.m. halfbred at 283 fid to 29s fid, 68 f.m. halfbred and 68 lambs at 13s fid, 70 halfbred and toree-quarterbred twotooth at 29s fid, 24 aged halfbred and 24 lambs at 13s 7d, 60 three-quarterbred at 30s, 23 f.m. halfbred at 18s, 66 s.m. halfbred at 29s 9d. fi4 s. and f.m. threequarterbred at 19s, 45 halfbred and 47 iambs at 15s Bd, 20 two-tooth three-quar-terbred and 20 lambs at 15$. Wethers—6o two-tooth at 238 fid. Hoggets—76 three-quarterbred ewe at 24s 9d, 70 halfbred ewe at 31s Id, 69 three-quarterbred ewe at 31s, 163 threequarterbred ewe at 31s. FAT SHEEP There was a large entry in the fat sheep pens, the total being approximately 5000 head, compared with 6750 at the double market a fortnight ago. Though the class was scarcely so good as at the National market, there was much excellent quality. Consignments were forward from Southland and South Canterbury. The market wag erratic. Over the earlier stages wethers and hoggets met With a sound demand, also lighter ewes, but heavy ewes were easier, and continued so throughout, the easing being above a full shilling. The heavy wethers were on an average down by nearly as much, but light ewes were up to last week’s rates. There were some passings of heavy wethers. Top price was 40s Id for a pen of four wethers from Jas. Campbell (Methven). A truck lot of 56 from T. B. Garrick (Pleasant Point) sold at from 36s Id to 39s 7d. Quality, however, showed a very marked oixference. Yesterday's entry included a Dig proportion of light steers and medium to inferior cows, the class showing a surprising relapse from the good standard of recent offerings. With butchers having Some of their pre-holiday purchases oh hand, and the market being oversupplied with indifferent quality, there was an all-round easing for all classes equal to about 15s a head. In Teases tne drop was greater, and there were more passings than for some time. In me earlier stages some good pens were offered, *and these did not show muen change on last week, but as the sale progressed the demand became progressively easier. STORE CATTLE There was an entire scarcity of. straight coloured young cattle in the store pens. Practically all forward were cows, and these sold remarkably well considering their class. Fresh young cows made up to £5 ss. DAIRY COWS The yarding was a very heavy one, which included a small proportion of good cows and heifers. Cows were difficult to sell over the earlier stages, but firmed in the middle of the sale, and eased towards the finish. For the few good cows, however, there was a sound demand, inferior sorts being hard to quit. Values were as under:— Extra good second and third calvers, £ll. ‘ ■ ... BURNSIDE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN. August 19. The entry of 250 fat cattle at the Burnside stock sale to-day was made up principally of medium quality bullocks with: a large percentage of cow* and heifers, and only a few consignments of prime heavy bullocks. The feature of the offering was a. truck of prime heavy bullocks from Southland, which attracted a great deal of attention and topped the market at £l9 17s fid. The sale opened easier than last week, all classes barely maintain-, ing late rates, and selling at par to 10s, easier throughout. There was an entry of 120 in the store cattle pens, which were.' poorly supported. The offering Included only a few steers and consisted largely of cull cows with a small percentage of vealers. Well-bred three to fouf-yfear steers met with a good demand and realised to £8 15s. The balance of the offering was quitted at satisfactory rates. A large entry, of dairy cows came forward, the bulk of which constituted a nondescript assortment, including backward sorts and late calvers.' Buyers sought goodyoung, close to profit cows, the remainder of the yarding falling to meet the same demand. There was a yarding of approximately--1500 fat sheep. Including a larger percentage of wethers than is usually the case. The ewes forward comprised mostly medium quality descriptions with a few consignment* of heavier grades. From the outset the market had an easier tone and wethers were down from Is to la fid a head, while owes suffered a similar decline. The sale continued on this basis till the final race, when there was a distinct improvement, the earlier drop being fully ..recovered. Very few hoggets were

forward, 'and this class met With a keen demand and improved values ruled. . Porkers predominated in the large yarding of 180 fat pigs. The sale opened with values in favour of purchasers, and there was no recovery. Values depreciated by ss' to 7s a head for both porkers. and baconers.
