WOMEN'S HOCKEY CANTERBURY’S STRONG SIDE TOURNAMENT AT BLENHEIM The team chosen to represent Canterbury at the women’* championship hockey tournament at Blenheim from August 80 to September 8 le one that must give satisfaction to Canterbury followers of the game. Although six of the player* will be representing the province for the first time there is no reason to suppose that the side will be any weaker than last year’s one at Gisborne. In the forwards, D. Dickey, left wing, holds her place, as does P. Robinson, who gained her colours for the first time last year, Both have shown good form in recent games, although the latter is better mi the left than on the right. £. Iggo, centre and captain, and Mary MeKensle are bom experienced players; but it is in the choice of a right wing that most satisfaction will be felt. Last year mi inside forward filled the position, but it M. Turner, a newcomer to the side, plays as well as she did in club matches, the inside forwards should be well served. The other new forwards, M. Smith and P. Bell, are both very promising players, the former having gained a place in the New Zealand University team In the last two seasons. The half-back line sees the biggest changes. With M. Gudsell unable to make the trip, only N. Prestney remains. V. MeNab, who was unable to travel last year, Is again included, and should fill the right-half position capably. S. Aldridge, playing in senior hockey for the first time this season, is one of the most promising halves seen for a long time. Earlier in the season she played for the New Zealand University team against Wellington. O. McKenzie, a forward in club matches, and at Gisborne last year, is the other half. Her first game in this position on Saturday was quite satisfactory, and she should do well, B. Andrews and M. Pearce gain places for the third time. Both are steady, but it would have been no surprise if the latter had been dropped in favour of a younger player. The other two players, P, Glllooly (back) and M. Hhind (goal), are both in their first season In senior hockey. The former has a long reach and can hit cleanly and accurately. M. Rhind comes from a goal-keeping family, two of her brothers having filled that position, and one is this season goalkeeper for Canterbury. She has been the most consistent goalie this season, and it Is no surprise to see her displace last year’s custodian. Futakl Wins Championship By beating Training College easily last Saturday, Pukakl won the senior championship for the second time in succession. Although the team was considerably different from last year’s winning combination it was without doubt the best side. Only one of the 10 matches played was lost and this happened when half the members were away on holiday. The runners-up are Hamby and Rangiora, each half a point behind the leaders.
