South Canterbury Interest South Canterbury has created a precedent and has arranged for a special basketball excursion train to transport its supporters—approximately ,200 strong—to Christchurch on August 29. Representative honours were even on Saturday when Canterbury met North Canterbury in two junior representative matches. The North Canterbury A team beat the Canterbury, junior B team by 13-7, and the Canterbury C team beat the North Canterbury B team by 11-5. The visitors’ A team was definitely superior to the local junior B team. The handling was good ahd it had all the tactics and movements of an A grade team, but lacked speed and finish. Local Competitions The Thea Muir trophy was decided on Saturday, when Technical A, holders of the trophy, beat Digby’s A by 21-7, thus winning the senior competition without losing a match throughout the season. Credit is due to Technical’s captain. Mrs Joan Hunter, who has trained and held her team together in a creditable manner. Although the score indicated an overwhelming win for Technical, Digby’s made a good showing, the main difficulty being in its forward third, where the forwards were repeatedly unsuccessful in breaking through Technical’s strong defence to secure the ball for shooting. The Technical forwards were on top form, combining tricky field work with consistent shooting. The result of the senior A section has not yet been decided. Beckenham and Ngaio are equal in first place with 20 points each. Ngaio has had 10 wins and 2 losses, and Beckenham has had 9 wins. 1 loss, and 2 draws. The final will be played on Saturday. Beau Ideal Cup Technical A has now moved into first position in the Beau Ideal Cup list, and it is very likely that this team will win the trophy. The order of the first 10 teams is as follows: — Technical A 223. Orama 212, Training College D 210, Northcote 198, Te Kura 194, Beckenham 192. Moeraki A 180, Ngaio A 172, Digby’s A 168, Spreydon 163. Fixtures August 22—Caqterbury C grade v. Banks Peninsula, at Christchurch. August 26-29—New Zealand tournament. at Christchurch.
