AEROPLANE SERVICE TO BE STARTED CARRIAGE OF SUPPLIES AND MAILS (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) HOKITIKA. August 19. In view of the decision to undertake the Haast Pass road construction. Air Travel. Ltd., has decided to extend its operations to Haast Valley. To that end landing grounds have been selected right to Burke Hill, at the foot of the Haast Pass. When workmen are employed on the road urgent supplies, mails, and parcels can be delivered at regular intervals instead of waiting days for the packhorse service. The aeroplane service will also be invaluable in cases of sickness, accident, or other emergency among the workmen. The Westland Progress League has resolved to urge the Post and Telegraph Department to make the South Westland air mail twice weekly In future, also to consider erecting a telephone line over the Haast Pass, service the road construction operations, and provide a duplicate outlet for the far southern district* as well as overhaul the existing telephone service via Mahitahi.
