SUNNYSIDE WINS

RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP CLOSED MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS .. CHALLENGE CUP ROUNDS TO START ON SATURDAY The senior Rugby competition was declared closed with Sunnyside the winners and Albion the runners-up at the . weekly meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening, when Dr, W. S. Seed presided. This was in accordance with the recommendation of the competitions committee as reported by Mr E, V. Phillips.: He said that there had been a long discussion before this was agreed upon, and the management committee did not pass the recommendation without a long discussion.

A further recommendation was put forward by Mr Phillips on behalf of the competitions committee, and this was that the challenge cup should be decided in three rounds, as there' were three teams in second place after the conclusion of the first round of the senior competition. The first game would be Christchurch against* Albion this Saturday, and the winners of this game would play Old Boys for the right to challenge Sunnyside in the final. The second game would be played on August 29, and the final challenge on September 5. Mr W. Britten said that if this game was to be limited to. the four senior teams he was definitely in favour of going on with the senior competition. One club in Christchurch had only played 11 games this season. Lack of Saturdays

Mr D. I. Macdonald said that there were only three Saturdays for the competition, and th&t one of them was August 29, when many players would be away watching the game against Otago at Dunedin. - Mr Phillips; The four leaders are well ahead Of the others. . Dr. D. McK. Dickson suggested that all the teams should be allowed to play for the Challenge Cup by playing two games on each Saturday, but confining them to two spells of 20 minutes each. The winners of each game would thus play what was equivalent to a full game. It would have the added value of bringing more of the general public to the grounds, as there would be four teams in action. It would also be possible to run the competition as a knock-out am get it over in the three Saturdays. Mr A. I. Cottrell supported this suggestion as an innovation. “It is our business to give the players their football, and if they do not want to play, that is their business,” said Dr. Seed. Referees Apathetic

Mr Phillips: The referees do not want to go on now as the representative games are cqming along.

“If you were to take a referendum players „ ou vrould Arid that most of them are dead against football now,” said Mr Macdonald. Mr Cottrell: “Club training is now dead.” He suggested that the competition should be dropped. The chairman then put the motion that Sunnyside should be declared the winners of the competition, and it was carried, with Mr R. R. Masters being the only dissentient. A further motion by Mr Britten that the selector be asked to choose a combined team of players from clubs other than Albion, Christchurch, High School Old Boys, and Sunnyside to meet the colts oh Saturday was passed. It was also decided to match Sunnyside with this team on the following Saturday and the colts again on September 5. ' Payne Trophy Game Having been declared the winners of the competition, Sunnyside will now meet Southern, winners of the senior gride championship in Dunedin, for the Payne trophy, Wednesday, September 2, was the date suggested for this game, and it was decided to write to the Otago Rugby Union to see if this day was suitable. Advice, was received from the New Zealand Rugby Union that Dr. D. McK. Dickson had been chosen to referee the game Australia v. Wairarapa at Carterton on September 2, and Dr. Dickson was congratulated on his appointment. It was decided that the Press v. Police match should be played as a curtain-raiser to the game on the oval on August 29. The Draw „ Challenge Cup elimination round— Christchurch v. Albion, Lancaster Park Oval (Mr J.
