TEST CRICKET

ENGLAND OPENS AGAINST INDIA HAMMOND’S BIG SCORE (VKITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received August 16, 9.28 p.m.) LONDON, August 15. The weather was ideal and the wicket perfect for the test between all India and England/ The Indian team included Jilani and Hussain to, strengthen the batting, in place of C. K. Nayudu and Meheromji. England won the toss and opened with Barnett and Fagg. The latter, playing defensively at a ball wide on the off, snicked it into the hands of the wicketkeeper. Hammond began shakily and survived two leg-before appeals. Thereafter he was steady, although not brilliant. Seventy-one was put on in the first hour. Barnett played a patchy innings. Attempting a pull he was out leg-before. Twelve thousand were present after lunch. Leyland stayed at 13 for a long time. Mushtaq All left the field with a leg injury. Leyland, who constantly drove Amar Singh, tried the same with Nissar and was bowled. Although Hammond continued to play crisp, forceful strokes, he had lucky escapes. Worthington did most of the scoring; Hammond’s 200 took 170 minutes. Htwas dropped by Wazir Ali when at 96. The pair added 200 in 130 minutes, eventually doing almost as they liked with the bowling. Hammond finally dragged one from Nissar on to his wicket. Hammond had hit 30 fours. The partnership was worth 266. Two overs later Worthington shared the same fate. He had hit 19 fours. After this paitnership, brilliant work by Hussain, who did not concede a bye, was the outstanding feature of the game.
