NEW THAMES ESTUARY TUNNEL

SYSTEM TO COST £3,200,000 (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) (Received August 16, 7.21 p.m.) RUGBY, August 14. The construction of the DartfordPurfleet tunnel to provide a link between the north and south sides of the Thames Estuary will begin within the next few weeks. The cost of the whole system is estimated at about £3,200,000. As a first step it is proposed to construct a pilot tunnel about 900 yards long with an internal diameter of 12 feet, also shield chambers and certain other ancillary works in connexion with the main tunnel. The pilot tunnel and ancillary work will cost approximately £300,000 and will provide information about the strata under the river at this point as well as on other matters which will be helpful in the construction of the main tunnel, which will be rather more than a mile long. At present there is no facility for crossing the Thames by means of a bridge or tunnel below the Blackwall Tunnel, which is three miles from the mouth of the. Thames Estuary. The distance between Blackwall and the site of the proposed tunnel is about 12 miles.
