SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Lady Young, who has been spending some weeks in Timaru, left yesterday to stay with her brother, Mr C. J. Miller, Woodbury, Mr and Mrs W, H. Orbell, Misses Nan and Annette Orbell (Levels), and Mr and Mrs C. L. Orbell, Misses Sylvia. Janet, and Molly Orbell (Pentlow), who were visitors to Christchurch for the races, returned home yesterday. Miss Josephine Roberts (Christchurch), who was the guest of her sister, Mrs, R. E. Gillingham (Nile street), hai. left for Wellington, en route for Canada. Mr and Mrs A. S. Elworthy (Holme Station, Pareora) returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Bernard Unwin (England) arrived yesterday from Winchester to stay with Dr. W. H. Unwin (Church street) for the Drama League’s festival, Mrs. R. T. Turnbull (Beverley road) returned yesterday from a visit to Christchurch. Mrs F. W. D. Atkin (Collingwood street) is visiting Dunedin. Mrs R. S. Goodman (Wai-iti road) has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Miss Joan Harper (Grassy Hills), who was the guest of Mrs J. W, K. Lawrence (Christchurch), returned home at the week-end. Mr and Mrs Harold Elworthy (Craigmore), who were visitors to Christchurch for the races, returned home on Saturday. Miss J. D. Stewart, formerly of Samoa, is staying with her sister, Mrs R. Wilson (Selwyn street). Miss Patricia Ritchie (Te Tawa), who was a visitor to Christchurch, returned home on Saturday, Miss D. Barron (Grey road) is visitmg her aunt, Mrs C, J. Ronaldeon, Christchurch, ..Miss Frostick and Miss Margaret Webster (Christchurch) are the guests of Mrs G. Webster (Nelson terrace). DANCE AT R.N.V.R. HEADQUARTERS The numerous social activities which are always a feature of race week, were brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday evening with a very enjoyable dance held at the headquarters of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, St. Asaph street. Many guests had accepted the invitations extended by Commander C. H, Rersley, who entertained several friends ata dinner party before the dance. The ship’s deck at the, reserve headquarters had been gaily, decorated with bunting, and the ringing of the ship s bell, at half-hour intervals helped to create a nautical atmosphere. P Music was supplied by Seymour’s Orchestra, and Sub-Lieutenant L. Hudson was officer of the watch.

On arrival, Miss Donaldson was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Miss Trickett. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs W. Hayes, and an extra was Pteyed by Miss L. L. Thompson and Mr C. W, Walker. The Rev, T. Paterson asked , Miss Donaldson to accept a number of'useful gifts. Mr Summerfleld asked Mrs vv . Hayes, on behalf of the abciaL committee, to present a cheque to the guest of honour, Mr R. Mugford was master of ceremonies for the dance.
