WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

SPOTSWOOD

WAIMAIRI-PAPANUI The August meeting of the WaimairiPapanui branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the new assembly hall, Papanui, with Mrs G. Thomson presiding. Four new members were elected. Delegates were selected to attend the girls’ educational -course to be held early in September. The resignation of the secretary (Mrs Film an) was received with regret. Congratulations were extended to Mrs H. A. Nutt on her appointment as Dominion vicepresident. Mrs Nutt gave a resume of the recent conference held in Wellington. Results of the afternoon’s competitions were:—Floral: Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Burrowes 2. Article from scraps of wool: Mrs Stevens 1. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Donald, Gray, and Miss Comer. HORORATA BRANCH MEETS There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hororata branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, over which Mrs T. E. Pearson presided. The clothes drive for the Salvation Army was well supported. A pleasant social half-hour was spent in games and competitions. Work of disabled soldiers was on sale! Competitions resulted:—Sponge: Miss Thorne 1, Mrs S. Gibson and Miss Helen Banks (equal) 2. Best bloom: Mrs M. Thome, jun., 1, Mrs Betts 2. The hostesses were Misses Thorne (2), and Mrs M. Thorne, jun. Miniature Rifle Club The seven-night handicap trophy match of the Hororata Miniature Rifle Club, which finished at last week’s shoot, was won by John Thorne in the senior grade and John Locker in the junior grade. DARFIELD Mrs A. A. Stott presided at a meeting of the Darfield branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, which was held in the Memorial Hall. At the birthday party to be held on September 14, two plays are to oe presented and an entertaining programme is being arranged. It was agreed to receive a returned soldiers* hamper from which Christmas gifts may be purchased. Impromptu speech-making was held during the afternoon. For the educational course in Christchurch, Miss A. Stewart and Miss Joan Clinton were elected with Miss D. Painter as substitute.

COALGATE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

PRESENTATION TO RETIRING PRESIDENT

The president, Mrs J. McCaughan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Coalgate Women’s Institute. Mrs McCaughan welcomed back Mrs Tilley, who has been away for some months, because of illness. The resignation of Mrs McCaughan, who is leaving the district, was received with regret. Mrs T. Johnston was elected president. Mrs J. Watson, of Lake Coleridge, demonstrated the making of sweet baskets. • During afternoon tea Mrs J. Watson presented Mrs McCaughan with a bouquet. Mrs Jenkins (vice-president) asked Mrs McCaughan to accept a gift and expressed good wishes for her future. Mrs T. Johnston presented the Misses Patricia, Monica, Maureen, and Noeline McCaughan with gifts, with good wishes. - Mesdames G. C. Derrett and J. McCaughan judged the competitions. Mrs M. Kellaway won the competition for the best knitted article with Mrs Tilley second and Mrs P. Prestidge third. The competition for the best bloom resulted: Mrs E. Charles 1, Mrs Jenkins 2, Mrs C. Green 3. MEETING AT TEMPLETON The August meeting of the Templeton Women’s Institute was held in the library, with Mrs G. Henshaw presiding. It was decided that the September meeting should take the form of a social afternoon to be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Mr Lovell-Smith. of Christchurch, gave an interesting lecture on “Coach transport during the Early Days,” and showed painted illustrations of his talk, and a model coach. The winners of the competitions were:—Vase of flowers: Miss D. Wilson 1, Mesdames Johnston, Cunagh, and Wright (equal) 2, Mrs Dale 3. Biscuits: Mrs Wright 1, Mrs Henshaw 2, Miss P. Kissel and Mrs Johnston (equal) 3. Jar of gooseberry jam: Mrs Curragh 1, Miss Wilson 2, Mrs Johnston and Mrs Kissel (equal) 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Coles and Kissel. HAWARDEN BRANCH MEETS Mrs H. J. Mackie presided over the August meeting of the Ha warden Women’s Institute. Favourite cakes and fillings were discussed by members. Mr W. Parsonage gave an' interesting talk on his experiences in Fiji.

Competitions resulted: —Best bloom: Mrs J. Doak 1, Mrs Dalzell, Mrs Burt, Miss E. Croft, and Miss K. Doak (equal) 2. Guest towel; Mrs H, V. Patchett 1, Mrs D. G. Scott and Miss M. Wright (equal) 2. Madeira cake: Mrs J. W. Wright 1, Miss M. Wright 2.

The Spotswood Hall was decorated with green and orange streamers, balloons, and greenery for the fifth birthday celebrations of the Spotswood Women’s Institute. The evening was spent in cards and dancing, with musical items. Mrs A. W. Leaman, president, lit the candles on the birthday cake, and the youngest- member, Miss Isabel Upston, blew them out. Miss Joyce Page presented Mrs Leaman with a bouquet. Mrs T. Wilkinson, president of the Parnassus branch, for the Cheviot group, asked Mrs A. C. Puller, group president, to accept a bouquet and good wishes for her birthday, which she celebrated on that day. Novelty dances were won by Miss M. Fitzgibbon and Mr J. Flaherty, Mr and Mrs L. W, G. Cone, and Miss Laura Elliott and partner. Winners of the cards were: Women, Mrs A. G. Harrison 1, Mrs L. W. G. Cone 2; men, Mr R. McAdam 1, Mr C. W. Dalgety 2. A guessing competition for a dressed doll was won by Mr M. Childs. Items were given by Mesdames A. C. Fuller, S. Smale, and Miss Mary Leaman. Music for the dance was played by Miss N. Fraser, with extras by Mrs T. Stevenson and Miss G. Fitzgibbon. Messrs J. M. Morrison and W. Fitzgibbon were masters of ceremonies. LADBROOKS The August meeting of the Ladbrooks Women’s Institute took the form of a social afternoon in. honour of Miss M. A. Cullen, who is leavmg the district. Mr s R.. A. Right (vice-presi-dent) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed to the president, Mrs R. J. Ware, who is at present a patient in the Christchurch Hospital and best wishes were expressed for her speedy recovery. An interesting letter and photographs were received from the Canadian Institute at Prince George, British Columbia. Competitions, and musical and vocal items were enjoyed. Competitions were won by Mrs R. A. Brown, Miss Cullen, and Misg Edna Coleman, Mrs M. Gallagher and Mrs H. CoteOan contributing items. For the institute members, Miaf I. M.
