GRAND NATIONAL MEETING

Manawatu Wins Steeplechase PONTY AND BOOMERANG SUCCEED a Large Increase in Totalisator Figures The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National Steeplechase meeting was concluded at Riccarton on Saturday under most favourable conditions, and there was again a large attendance in spite of the strong counter-attraction at Lancaster Park. The tiack was in firm order, and some fast times for a winter, programme were recorded. The racing was probably the best seen on the course for a long time, and this result must have been Ygjy gratifying to the club’s handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, whose adjustments through the whole programme, whilst making the tasks of investors difficult, brought about consistently close contests, both in the flat and jumping events. The time-table on Saturday was strictly adhered to, and notwithstanding the rush of totalisator business, the machine closed before the concluding race only six minutes behind schedule, and there was little, if any, money closed out. The sum handled during the day was £52,007 (win £24,426 10s, place £27,580 10s), against £35,968 (win £16,878 10s, place £19,089 10s) on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £16,039. Thb aggregate for the three days’ meeting was £145,122 10s (win £64,984, place £80,138 10s), compared with £111,026 10s (win £49,422, place £61,604 10s) at last year’s meeting, an increase of £34,096.

The club’s chairman, Mr A. S. Elworthy, had a strong committee to assist him throughout the week, and the organisation of the secretary, Mr F. T. H. Bell, and his staff assured the smooth running of the programmes. Once again Mr P. D. MacNab’s work at the barrier was of a high standard.
