Yesterday, when the second programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting was run at Riccarton, was a day of surprises, In the morning, although the sun was shining brightly, a high wind was blowing, and women racegoers, anticipating a trying day, decided that warm wraps and small hats would be the wisest wear. But about noon, the wind dropped, and in the afternoon conditions were very pleasant. Pur coats were doffed and neatly tailored frocks were seen to advantage, until after the sixth race, when the wind again sprang up and made coats a necessity. Their Excellencies, Lord arid Lady Galway were the guests of honour and were adcoriipamed by Major and Mrs Arthur Purvis, and Captain Heber-Percy. Many prominent residents representative of all parts of Canterbury, were presented to their Excellencies in the Vice-Regal box by Mr Arthur Elworthy. chairman of the club, and Mrs Elworthy, and after the second race, Lord Galway presented the Duke of Gloucester Cup to Mr R. ; W. A. Lewis, owner of Shy, the winning horse. Her Excellency wore a suit Of black boucle tweed, blouse of black, grey, and white check satin, and black straw hat with band and part brim of black felt. Mrs Arthur Purvis, black suit, violet jumper, high crowned black hat. Mrs Arthur Elworthy, wife of the chairman, wore an ensemble of. navy angora lightly striped and flecked with pedtl grey, made with three-quarter lerigth coat, matching Jumper with bands of openwork, smoke fox fur, navy felt hat with posy of flowers in front; Mrs George Gould, navy and white angora cloth frock, tweed coat, navy shovel hat with mother-of-pearl ornament: Mrs W.
