five thousand pine TREES PLANTED

RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL’S PROGRAMME About 5000 pine trees have been planted in the Rangiora Borough Council’s reserves at the Ashley river bed and at Maria Andrew Park this season. In addition, more than 50 ornamental trees have been Planted in streets in the borough. This is more extensive than the council s usual planting programme, but the removal of trees in the park has made room for young ones. Silver birch trees have been planted in Burt, Edward, Aquilla, and King streets horse chestnuts in Buckham street, ’and plane trees in Queen street to replace those recently destroyed. Hall, who has resigned as assistant town clerk at Rangiora In take UC the position of secretary to the Hokianga Hospital Board at Rawene, was met by the staff of the Rangiora Borough Council_yesterday. The town clerk (Mr J. M. Fraser) extended best wishes for the future, and the inspector (Mr H. T. Oates) presented Mr Hall with a pipe and a shaving outfit. Mr Hall will leave for of Mr S. Lamport from the teaching staff of the Rangiora Borough School was accepted with regret by the school committee last evening. Appreciation of Mr Lamport’s services in the last seven years and his work as music master was expressed. Mr G. A. Robertson, of Gore, was appointed to succeed Mr Lamport, who will go to the Cashmere School. Methodist Missionary Union Officers were elected as follows at the annual meeting of the Rangiora branch of the Methodist Womens Missionary Union yesterday afternoon: —President, Mrs W, T. Dennis; vicepresidents. Mesdames T. Coatsworth, J. Patchett. H. T. Oates. C. S. Ayers. C. B. Thwaites. R. Robinson, P. J. Thorne and F. B. Lane: secretary, Mrs Ayers; ’ assistant secretary, Mrs A. V. Miller; treasurer. Miss N. Harman. A successful year was reviewed in the annual- report. The membership of the branch was 53, an increase of eight since last year. The total included residents of Rangiora, Southbrook, Waikuku. and Sefton. A credit balance of £42 8s was shown in the financial statement. Letters were received from sisters In the North Island and the Solomon Islands. A solo was sung by Mrs H. S. Peryman, and gifts for missions were handed in. White Parking Lines , Under the by-laws of the Rangiora Borough Council, vehicles may not be parked within 33 feet of an intersection in the business area of the borough. White parking lines are being placed in the main streets to assist in the enforcement of tne regulation as traffic becomes congested on Tuesdays and Fridays. Motor Vehicles Collide When a delivery van, owned by A. Johnstone and Sons, bakers, of Sefton. and driven by W. A. Jamieson, collided with a motor-car owned ana driven by E. T. An application from the New Zealand Anglican Girls’ Bible Class Union for the use of the Rangiora Borough School for its annual Dominion camp at the end of the year was granted by the school committee last evening. About 200 campers will be in Rangiora from December 27 till January 8 The chairman, Mr C. J. Smith, presided. , , A roll of 359 children was reported by the headmaster, Mr C. D. Gilling. 'There had been an average attendance of 331.6. Miss Matthews had been transferred to Marshland at short notice. It was decided to apply for an additional relieving assistant to replace Miss Matthews. Regent Theatre

KAIAPOI Motor drivers’ licenses issued by the Kaianol Borough Council to date total 263. Dog registrations, for the year at present amount to £26. There are still a number of registrations to be made. LOYAL CHEVIOT LODGE The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Cheviot Lodge. No. 9604, Ashley district, was held with the N.G., Bro. A. Goodman, presiding. One new member was proposed for initiation to the order. The lecture master, P.G. Bro. J. Carson, conferred the white degree upon two members and the blue degree upon two members.

Miss G. Pugh, who has been engaged as infant mistress at the Cheviot School for the last six months, relieving Miss E. Sloss, who has been on sick leave, has now left Cheviot. Miss Sloss has resumed duties as infant mistress at the Cheviot School.

LAKE ELLESMERE OUTLET

NEW OPENING MADE Although the work was delayed in its final stages through the breakdown of one of the tractors, an outlet for Lake Ellesmere was successfully completed, and water has been running through for several days. Scouring has increased the width of the channel, and if the weather remains fine there should be a marked decrease in the lake level by next week-end.

PRESENTATION AT LITTLE RIVER

Mr and Mrs A. Louden, who are leaving Little Rivsr to take up their residence at Sockburn. were entertained recently, at a social in the Town Hall, Little River. Mr Louden has been ganger on the railway staff at Little River for nearly 10 years. The pleasant evening was spent in dancing. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs A. Gibb and Miss Thelma McQueen and Mr F. Louden. Music for the dancing was played by Mrs F. Poolev Mrs L. Radford, Miss M. Webster Miss W. Stott, Messrs W. Chappie, H Stewart, and A. Radford. . For the residents of Little River, Mr H C Stewart presented Mr and Mrs Louden with two fireside chairs, and Mr G. Withers, for the railway and post office staffs, presented Mr Louden with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch. SOUTHBRIDGE TOWN BOARD « A monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board was presided over by S Commissioner J. H. Hampton. Grants were made to the Thompson Memorial Library, the Ellesmere Technical Library, the Ellesmere Technical Association, and the Canterbury Progress League. The medical officer of health, Christchurch, notified the board that its annual payment for sanitary and other inspections was being Jncreased from £8 14s works committee reported that street metalling work was being done, and the hall committee said that improvements to the Town Hall stage were in hand. The credit balance was reported to be £lB5 12s. Memorial Library A meeting of the Thompson Memorial Library Committee was held, with Mr R. J. Parkin presiding. Beamsley, and Miss E. Sloan. Social Club A pleasant time was spent at an open social arranged by St, James* Young People’s Club.,at which there was a good attendance. Games and dancing were enjoyed, the musicians being Miss R. Greenwood, Mrs C. L. Wilson, and Mr D. Montgomery. Messrs K. Beamsley and G. Strutton were masters of ceremonies, and Monte Carlo prizes went to Miss Greenwood and Mr Millar. . „ Croquet Club Afternoon

A novelty afternoon was held by the Ladies’ Croquet Club. Items were given by Mesdames G. B. Couch, W. C. Eggelton, and T. H. Bennett and Misses Eggelton and J. and C. Willis. Competitions were won by Mrs G. Doyle and Miss V. Wylie. A community sing was led by Mrs Couch and a playctte, “Booms to Let, 1 was successfully staged. A cake and produce stall realised a satisfactory amount, and the winners of club competitions were Messrs J. C. Hampton and T. Greenall.

LEITHFIELD SCHOOL JUBILEE

A meeting of the Leithfleld School Jubilee Reunion Committee was held recently, when it was decided to close the competition for the hearthrug given by Mr and Mrs Russell. The colours of ribbon for each decade and design of badge were chosen. The secretary was instructed to write and thank the Parker family for their gift of a cake for the celebrations.

SPRINGS-ELLESMERE POWER BOARD

The members present at the monthly meeting of tHe Springs-Ellesmere Power Board were Messrs G. Maginnest. (chairman), E. H. Rowell, H. Neave, R. T. McMillan, and A, E. Langdale-Huht. The finance report gave the month’s revenue as £2209 9s lOd and the ere hi balances as followS: Power fund, £1453 13s sd; No. 5 loan, £575 Os 6i. The cost of current was £9OO 19s 6d compared with £BSO 12s 8d for the corrt-sponding month last year. A report was made by the engineersecretary on a conference of country supply authorities recently held in Christchurch.

Wrung in his dual capacity as organiser for the Canterbury Progress League and liaison officer to the employment branch of the Labour Department, Mr P. R. Climie asked if the board would prepare a list of any public works if considered would be of economic use to the district and provide additional employment. The en-gineer-secretary will discuss the matter with Mr Climie.

The board declined an invitation to attend a meeting at Hornby to discu'-s charges for current but intimated that it would be pleased to receive representations by the residents. The Leeston Town Board asked if more street lights could be provided in Leeston without an Increase in the cost. It was agreed that the request could not be granted. CHORLTONLITTLE AKALOA The August meeting of the ChorltonLittle Akaloa branch of the Women’s Division was held with Miss L. Moore, one of the vice-presidents, presiding. Congratulations were extended to Mrs Nutt on her election as Dominion Vice-president. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs J. Marshall, who is an inmate of the Christchurch Hospital Two girls were nominated for the country girls’ education week. Final arrangements were made for . the branch’s second birthday party. The competition for a plate of pastry was won by Miss Moore with Mrs R. M. Craw second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames C. R. Waghorn and A. Craw. EAST EYRETON Mrs D. M. Martin, who has been spending a holiday with her sister at Nelson, has returned home. Mr and Mrs J. Deitrich, West Coast, are staying with Mr and Mrs Patterson. HORNBY The monthly meeting of the Hornby School Committee was held with Mr F, O. McTiegue (chairman) presiding.
