AMATEUR STATUS OF SWIMMERS
——♦ FEDERATION GIVES RULINGS BERLIN, August 9. The conference of the International Swimming Federation decided that baths or surfing attendants cease to be amateurs by engaging directly or indirectly in duties for remuneration, but 90 days alter ceasing such employment the Nai tional Swimming Union is empow- ‘ ered to reinstate them. ■ The conference ruled that teach- : ers at swimming schools or colleges 1 should not forfeit their amateur i status provided they teach only . amateur swimming without addi-
cual remuneration, and do not coach for competitions. The conference also ruled that the amateur status of a swimmer hould not be endangered by his participating in purely life-saving events, but he is rigidly excluded rom swimming in surf races.
