COUNTY COUNCILS

TAWERA The monthly meeting of the Tawera County Council was held. There were present: Mr R. M. D. Johnson (chairman), Crs H. C. Amyes, J. K. McAlplne, R. Milliken, and A. Duncan. A resolution was passed expressing sympathy with Cr. F. M. Gladstone Robinson in the loss; of his father. A suggestion from the Waipa.County .Council that it be made compulsory for all heavy motor vehicles engaged in the transportation of goods to be fitted with sealed governors, was considered impracticable. The Medical Officer of Health advised that the county’s share of the health inspector’s salary would, for the future, be substantially increased. It was decided to endorse a resolution from the Petone Borough Council Urging that representations be made to the Government in the direction of relieving ratepayers irom the ever increasing burden of the costs of hospital administration.

SELWYN

The monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council, held at Hororata, was attended by Councillors W. Gilmour 'chairman), N. J. Brown; E. A. Dimcan, G, H. Grigg, K. W. J. Hall, T. D. Jarman, R. H. Johnson, T. E. Pearson, and W. Stone. The North Canterbury Hospital Board advised that the levy on the council for 1933-37 would be £1644 6s id, A letter was received from the Petonfe County Council asking for rep-

resentations to be made to the Government ' upon the ever-increasing burden placed on boroughs and counties through hospital board levies. It was decided to support the proposed through the Counties’ Association. The chairman reported upon the conference that he had attended in 3h:x tchurch on July 9, 1038, about cen tennial celebrations. A committee of Christchurch on July 9. 1936. about consider suggestions for the celebrations in Canterbury. It was decided to recommend .to the committee that there be one. memorial J of a useful nature for each of 'the four main centres, and that local celebrations be held as well where desired. Support was given to the suggestion of extending the museum in Christchurch as the memorial for Canterbury* The Department of Health wrote advising that the council's contribution to its local health inspector was inadequate, and stated that a charge of 6d a head of population would be necessary to enable the department to recover a reasonable proportion of the cost of the service. The council was. however, entitled to charge certain license, fees for inspections of food premises and for drainage installations. . It was decided to make enquiries about suitable by-laws.

The Public Works Department advised that the Minister for Public Works (the Hon, R. Semple) had decided that, after considering the circumstances of each local body in Canterbury and the rates levied, it Would be reasonable to expect these bodies to meet the cost of restoration of flood damage by raising loans. The department also wrote about the proposed declaration of State highways, asking that adequate maintenance be carried out on all highways pending the introduction of the change. . ‘
